I picked one up for the wife for about $40 on ebay a couple years ago, I keep finding myself using it. Just something about it makes it more fun to play with.

There's a little something to it more than that though.

The Rainmaker is one of those guns that just feel a little bit alive. Not the usual near simultaneous click/pop of other electros, it has a sort of pulse. A subtle wind up to the shot.

A few other guns have this feeling. The ATS line of guns, the Vector, even working the pump action on an old Sheridan with the Speed Demon bolt.

The Rainmaker, to me, feels like (in comparison to military weapons) the Springfield 1886 or earlier model rifles used in wars such as the Revolutionary War or Civil War. Its old, its clunky and as someone said before its almost like a "click...bam" feel to it. Not an immediate response kind of feel to it like earlier weapons.

Unlike a lot of earlier electros, the RM has a very tight feel to it. You can tuck it in really tight unlike the Shocker sport or Angel LED which were the top dogs of those times.

Ive used it a couple times now and my verdict is.....I like it! It has a unique sound to it (My friends can always tell when Im firing) and gets compliments. Plus its fun to rock the world of ramping users (I hate ramping) with this beast.

I never owned one but my best friend did and I could always tell his location on the field once he started firing. The sound of it was probably the most endearing thing to me about it. It's kind of like an AK-47 in that it has a very distinct sound when fired at you.

The R/M is built like a tank heavy , solid feel. If you have a full auto board , when fireing it you think a auto shotgun is being used. When you go to a field most people will say what is that thing. I just tell them to wait listen and feel.

Now that would be awesome. I've never heard a full auto RM but that's a marker I'd consider owning. I wonder what kind of aftermarket board does that conversion?

Edit: A Universal T Board?

The RMs were also released with a dip switch select fire board (semi/3 burst/full auto), though I'm not sure which gen it was.

how does the rainmaker perform compared to newer style low-end electros? and if the rainmaker is BE's high performance marker of old, what happened to BE making tournament grade markers?

IMO, the best board upgrade for the RM is to just remove the circuit board completely. You just wire the solenoid to the trigger switch in line with the battery. That means one wire from the solenoid to one side of the battery, then the other side of the battery to the trigger switch, then the remaining side of the solenoid to the remaining side of trigger switch. There's no polarity (+/-) to worry about. The f/a boards were actually limited to 8 bps.

If you want to get fancy, you can put a diode across the solenoid to prevent what's called back EMF (voltage.) The (-) side of the diode would go to the (-) side of the solenoid, which is whichever side is going to the battery ground. The (+) side of the diode would go to the other side of the solenoid, the side that ultimately connects to the (+) side of the battery.

What....the....

Your right, it took 1 battery (singular, not plural.) In 1998 when you could choose between 3 electronic markers, you could own the field with one of these. It was a good marker.

You joined April 2011, noob.

Indeed, your choices for electros were shoebox shocker, angel LED or rainmaker. Around the late 90's more options because available such as the tribal, bushmaster/defiant1 etc...

For it's time, the angel was very well engineered. The shoebox had some issues but shot great. The rainmaker (stock) was pretty much a mess in comparison to the angel or even the shoebox. I think that's the reason many people find them so charming. Not only do they possess a bizarre operating system that was an evolutionary dead end, but they require some fairly extensive tweaking and tuning to get running well. I don't know about you, but that definitely appeals to the nerd in me!!

considering brass eagle was making angels for WDP at that time, they sure did make this thing a pos. A fun pos though, i will never sell

Incorrect. BE was marketing the Angel for WDP here in the US in exchange for (if I remember correctly) promoting the hyperball concept and a few other things. BE didn't exactly hold up their end of the bargain and WDP eventually started distributing the Angel in the US themselves. BE did not make any Angels; they were just to market them in the states.

On topic, the RM can be a reliable machine, given certain modifications. I once owned one with Mad Marty's mods 1-7 and it worked like a charm. No issues whatsoever.
