for all things metal. So I've been listening to a lot of metal recently and I want more. Specifically stuff similar to Ensiferum. That folk/viking stuff, you know what I mean.

I have a five page research paper over Charles Bukowski and about a dozen calculus papers.

I personally love black metal. It's such a clash against what was going on at the time. It's a way of saying "**** you!" to all of those that were following trends, be it in the "counter-trend" death metal and punk groups or just average people. Norwegian black metal is all about paying homage to their ancestry prior to being Christianized. They were upset about that their pagan religions were wiped out, dishonored by Christians by placing churches over pagan holy grounds. That's why they burned down churches. The Christians didn't respect their heritage so they didn't respect Christianity. Bands like Darkthrone or Immortal that talk about geography or the "frostbitten north" etc. are describing the lands they live in and their general emotion. Just like crust punk, it is a very pissed off genre, as they destroy their instruments and their yell at the top of their lungs, which is why Darkthrone was so able to transform their sound from traditional black metal to blackened crust/thrash. The lo-fi quality is just another "**** you!" to modern trends. They don't want their music to sound aesthetically appealing, they don't want to fit in or be Americanized. Their albums are in black and white because the other genres were all about vibrant album art and this monochromatic image was another way of differentiating themselves from the rest.

tl;dr: rebelling against trends.

That's blackened death metal.

Part of poor-production that catches me is how humble it is? Like, "we love the music we play and we're going to get it out there, regardless of our recording capabilities." With lo-fi production, it seems to retain that emotion that can be ironed out during the production process if they're in a studio instead of their basement with a tape deck.

I think the poor production adds a bit of gritty flavor to it that really fits well, although sometimes it gets too muddy to the point of not being able to hear individual instruments well enough to enjoy it. I thought it was amusing when I bought Gorgoroth's last live CD and realized that the live recording of Destroyer is actually much clearer than the original.

I like the low fi production. It feels more real to me. More alive I guess. Also, If you ACTUALLY listen to the low fi greats like burzum or darkthrone you can actually hear quite a bit. I can hear the bass lines for under a funeral moon and transylvanian hunger quite well.

I didn't not like them, I just wasn't completely stoked on them, but after listening more, I like them a lot.
