i had an anole when i was 12 and i've been thinking about getting a bearded dragon, but what do you feed them? running to the pet store for crickets every 4 days was REAL annoying. post up pics of your pet too!

Well I have a colony of lobster roaches that I feed to all 3 of my beardies. But I offer them veggie's in the morning (mustard and collard greens, endive, catus pad and sometimes carrots. And later on around 3 or 4pm I'll feed them them roaches. I dust the roaches and the veggies with d3 calcium 5 to 6x out of the 7day week.
I dont recomend Crickets as a feeder cuz they don't have very much nutrition and their life spans is short. They stink and make a lot of noise. Roaches on the other hand can live up to 1 year, don't smell, don't make noise, breed fast so you won't run out, and are from the tropical so you don't have to worry abot them escaping and infesting your house, they'll die within 24-48 hours cuz they have certin heat and humidity requirements. Also they eat anything you give them. (but I just feed them the same veggies I feed my beardies.) some people say it's okay to feed them dog/cat food but I dont cuz it has alot of chemicals in it. Plus the veggies have water in it so it also helps hydrate the beardies and roaches.
Oh and it's important that the day before you give your beardies veggies, you should put the veggies in a bowl and fill it up with water. The veggies will soak up as much water as it can, and them the next day you can chop it up and feed it off. It provides more water so your beardies won't become dehydrated as easy.
Any other questions you have you can ask, I've had bearded dragons for about 9 years now.

Well you have to buy some roaches first, then let them breed for about 3 or so months so you'll have enough to feed off and won't run out. I have lobster roaches but those are kind of difficult to keep cuz they Are able to crawl up smooth surfaces. But an other good roach to breed are dubia roaches they can't climb like lobsters do so they would be better. I keep lobsters cuz when I bought them I got about 3000 of them. So I'm sort of stuck with them untillni feed them all off. But now I'd rather have dubia cuz it would be a lot less stress full knowing I don't have to worry about my mom yelling at me about a roach that made it's way into the kitchen. But I bought about 500 roaches from http://www.aaronpauling.com/ I had no problems at all when ordering. And the cool thing is that the more you buy the cheaper it gets. I know a lot of places do that as well but I believe he has the best prices out of every other website. but yea man for sure go with the dubia over the lobsters if your serious about starting a colony. And in the end you'll save a ton of money cuZ your not going to the pet shop all the time to buy crickets over priced crickets.

Dubias are great for feeders and super easy to breed! I also agree with everything The Third said. I used to keep beardies and I would slice up thin slices of apples for a treat too. I feed mine super worms also, not to be confused with meal worms. Meal worms are a No No, so don't let a pet store salesmen sell you any for beardie food.

Beardies are a wonderful pet for someone that likes a companion reptile. FYI, don't forget the UVB bulbs! They are a must for many lizards.

I didn't read most of the thread, and I haven't had a bearded since Sophomore year (~3 years ago), but for the 12 years that I had him, I fed crickets twice a week and once a day I gave fresh salads (romaine lettuce and tomato pieces made up most of it).

I don't remember why other than the exotic animal/reptile vet suggested it when we got him and it seemed to keep him healthy so it worked. I'd probably look into it more now though...

Bearded dragons eat 2-3 times a day, veggies in the morning because they take longer to digest, the rest of the day insects. You should not feed a beardie past 430pm because of the time the beardie needs to digest it's food. Also it's not good to feed a beardie romain lettuce because it doesn't offer nutrition and causes diarrhea, tomatoes are only sopost to be fed rarely. Glad to hear that he lived that long though, and that now your looking more into it.

Here's a VERY GOOD nutrition sheet if you want to know just about every plant matter a beardie is able to eat

Oh and the roaches you keep in a sterilite storage container. Cut about 50-60% of the center top off for ventilation.

plastic tote from walmart..they can't climb smooth surfaces. FYI, neither can superworms or mealworms. (don't feed meal worms to beardies, they cannot digest them and it can cause blockage)
