Anyone else keep Koi?

Back in England I made a huge Koi pond that took up 1/3 of my back yard. I dug it by hand and it was big enough to take two swimming strokes across and was 6 feet deep!

The edge was raised with railroad ties so you could sit on the edge and feed the fish by hand. The water inside came right to the top of the edge.

I had a huge over size filter system, skimmer, waterfall and lighting all controlled by remote control.

I used to love turning all the filters off at night and the lights on, then going out and watching the fish with a drink in hand. The fish looked like they were floating in glass. You could see bugs on the bottom 6 feet down...

I miss it.

So my new place has a pond 160feet long, and 60 feet across.

It was pretty much stagnant at the beginning of this year when I bought the place. The only life was bull frogs.

I already put a fountain in it over summer and fall and the water was a lot better, but I also got an explosion of weed that I will have to deal with.

I plan to implement a waterfall and some sort of filtersystem in spring... and then stock it with some Koi.

Here's the damn weed that started growing as soon as the pond started clearing up. Duckweed I believe.

That is so sweet. Hopefully when i'm older i'll have land like that. My aunt has Koi fish, i'll take pictures next time i'm there.

I remember hearing once that duckweed can help keep water clean. I think it may even help with mosquito problems--if that is at all an issue.

DAMN thats a big pond! if it didnt get cold like that, some jardini and some arowana would be SWEEEEET! and like a small raft, they would be soooo awesome

Nice, I have a 3000 gallon koi pond. Winter has hit pretty hard this year and I had to enclose and insulate.

I love my fish man, totally addicting.

could you place a grass carp in there, they eat moss and stuff like that and help keep it all clean, at least thats what ive ben told..

My understanding is that duckweed isn't considered a pest for ponds. I could be wrong of course.

Idk about in England but here in the states.. Pretty much all railroad ties are VERY toxic due to the oil that they are soaked in so they don't rot as quick.

But non the less very cool. My Buddys parents have small Koi pound in there back yard about 8ft across and 3 ft deep. With some plants and little water fall going into it.

The ties didn't come into contact with the water.

They were used to build up the side in one area, then dirt was inside them, and then it was lined with old carpet, and then a heavy duty pond liner.

The liner came up and over the top of the ties, and then I placed a non treated plank for the seat on top of the liner all around the edge to sit on.

Fill with water to just below the seating plank and everything was great.

I need to find that picture and get it scanned.
