For the price .. Is the rebel Xs i camera that is worth buying? I have a budget of at least 500 and i heard things about the xs , but it couldnt compare too the t2i. Is there any new rebel xs or whatever coming out?

Ive got the xs body. Its a great camera. Really good starter. Once you put some nice glass on it, you'll see some great results. I havent had a single problem with mine.

and a 5dmkIII is more likely then 7dmkII. pretty sure the buzz is that the mkIII is gonna be out end of this year. they are expected to announce something at CP+

if you think you would like to use video too the t2i would be a good choice. but other than that, i don't think its worth paying more money for it over the XS. you could also look into a used 20D or 30D body too.

my guess is a new rebel...and 5d mkIII...we're almost to the 3 year cycle of FF.

Possibly the 1dsIV but it's weird that it's not out yet. Nikon is rumored to come out with some mirrorless aps-c so I bet canon might try to release some of that stuff too since the olympus, sony, and pentax ones are doing well.

My teacher who loves canon rumors and **** was saying that the 5d3 should be released sometime Q4 this year, 1ds4 prob won't happen, and a new L wide angle 15-50 f/4

Hmmm, a replacement for the 17-40? Don't know if I could part with mine though, its a beast. I do like that focal range more though...

Yeah it's supposed to be a replacement, but the 17-40 is cheap and like you said beastly.

i wonder if it will have IS. that would really set it apart. i'm torn right now between getting the 17-40, 16-35, and the 17-55 ef-s. i'm leaning towards the 17-55 right now, due to it's f/2.8 and and IS. even if i get a FF in the future, i don't think i'd set my 7d off to the side and never use it, so it'll continue to get use. i'm really interested in the IS though for video, it'll really help with hand shake while filming handheld. but i'm pretty sure i'll have a spare few thousand from my student loans, so i might just grab a lens with it if i can. so you guys have any additional insite between these 3?

keep in mind you have to be careful using IS during video recording because depending on your audio setup it will pick up the IS motors on the audio track.

17-40 is now my most used lens, its on my camera 85% of the time unless I am shooting sports which obviously brings out the 70-200. My 24-70 sits on my desk most of the time now, i dont even bring it with me unless I think I am going to need it, its just too much weight. 5d2 and 17-40 is It is the best impulse purchase I have ever made.

yea, seems like everyone who owns the 17-40 loves it which makes it very temping. but only good that does is make my decision that much harder haha. as far as the audio, if i'm filming anything of importance I'd use an external mic and record the audio separately so the noise from the IS won't matter.

another reason the might shy me away from the 17-40 is the f/4. i'm tryin' to get myself more into concert/live event type photography, and so far the work i've done has been pretty low light, f/4 wouldn't cut it i dont' think, i was shooting between f/1.8 and f/2.8 with decent success @ 1600iso i could bump it to 3200 now that i have the 7d but if i don't have to, i don't want to. i've used the 16-35 mark I and liked it a lot, but again, that just makes my decision harder haha

if you are shooting alot of that stuff, stay away from zooms and just get a wide prime and a normal prime. The difference from f2.8 to f4 is not that much

Get a 30ish 1.4 and a 85 1.8 thatss what i would do if that was my focus.

^This. I find the Canon 28 1.8 and 85 1.2 to be perfect focal lengths for that sort of thing (and for a wide variety of situations)

I had a 28 1.8 for a while and wasn't a fan of it...not quite a 24 and not quite a 35...but I guess if that's what you want.

how is the 28mm f/1.8, i've got the f/2.8 and love it, maybe i'll get that. rah, too many choices haha. I've got the 85 and love it. but i think IS might be my best option still, I shot video for this place who will probably have me shoot again, but i could definitely tell i could use some IS, especially some of the later video after my arms where about to fall off haha. 7D+battery pack w/ 50mm f/1.4. at least it was a small lens haha.

btw, what's the value of a 24 over a 28?

Any thoughts on 3rd party battery grips for Canons? I haven't seen any reported issues with them, but was curious as the 3rd party grips are around 60-70$ cheaper than the Canon grip itself O.o

I had a 3rd party battery grip for my old rebel XTi a while back, it felt really cheap, I wound up returning it.

Wait until right before sundown to get nice warm directional light. It may be too harsh, so bring a reflector and use the sun to give them a rimlight and fill there face with a large reflector or use a diffuser to soften the light
