Mechanical Only Paintball League

So i've been out of the sport for about 2 years now. Played woodsball back around 2004, then played tourney ball from 2005 to 2008, mostly in the NCPA and PSP.

Now that I'm about to graduate from college I've been looking at getting back into paintball, but i've noticed that it has deteriorated greatly from when i last played. Many of the premier fields in my area have closed down, as well as almost all of the shops, and it seems message boards everywhere are speaking of the end of the sport.

Firstly, have things really gotten that bad? Forgive my ignorance, for as i said, i've had zero paintball interaction since 2008.

Secondly, if things are so bad, i can only imagine that its still due to high equipment and paint costs. If that is the case, it got me thinking, would tourney players (or players in general) be interested in a mechanical only paintball league? Pretty much keep the tourney format the same, but allow only unmodified mechanical markers. This would drastically lower paint costs, and would make it so that anyone with enough money to buy a gun from walmart could play and not be severely outgunned.

Just wanted everyones opinion and input on this. If things are as bad as people say they are, it just seems like we need to try to find a way to keep tourney ball alive.

Not in my area, from what I've seen. It's a shame, too, I think a mech league would be a blast.

Now, for one season in PSP, the ROF cap was 10 bps for everyone except the top one or two tiers, which were capped at 12. There was a provision added to the rulebook which allowed for pure (non-RT) mechanical guns to run without being policed for ROF. I thought this was a brilliant move that could have brought mechanical guns back to the big leagues, but moving everyone to 12.5 bps kind of shot that in the tail. There is now a note for the Masters Division that lets players under 40 play if running mechanical guns. I believe the "younger" player can then be between 30-39. Someone please correct me if I'm remembering wrong. I'm only a couple years from Masters qualification anyway, and the memory ain't what it used to be.

The sad bottom line is that since the industry has a goodly amount of influence over the leagues, and/or the players who play in and operate the leagues, I believe we are unlikely to see mechanical divisions any time soon.

To hard to change the national leagues.

Now locally, that's much easier. Talk to your local field about running a mech only tournament once a month, or once every other month. Price it so that it ends up being about the same cost as a day of walk-on. Go trophies only to start. If it gets popular ramp up the entry cost and put the extra money towards prizes.

It's a fun idea. I would play if I still owned a mech gun. Even my pump is an electro :/
