So my girlfriend is long distance and lately we've been thinking about breaking it off. We go to college about four hours' drive apart from each other and things can get strained sometimes because of that distance. I am very happy with her and I'm glad I'm dating her, but at the same time there is a part of me that thinks I'm just staying with her because she'd be absolutely crushed if we were to break up. Is it worth giving that part of me any consideration? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Ps first. Why am I awake?

i don't think that kind of distance is worth it. you should probably break it off.

Honestly distance is a really tough thin to deal with. You are going to have way to many opportunities to cheat on her, your are hardly going to see her. I'd break up with her, just explain to her that you don't think a long distance relationship can work out.

agreed. i tried it with my gf. a month into it she makes out with other guy, breaks up with me. long story short, one of you will hook up with someone else, it's easier if you just break it off.

Best day of the week besides caturday!
Long distance should only really be attempted later on in life. Not really in college. By long distance I mean anything >1 hours drive. It is a lot of stress, and some things can be very hard to deal with if the maturity level is not there in both parties.

I'm kind of involved in a long distance thing. She lives in NYC for school, I live about 3 hours away in MD.
Before we met I wasn't really interested in anything but broing out and school, so long distance kind of caters to me. I don't really care to talk to most girls, because they're unbearably stupid for the most part. I've never been capable of maintaining a platonic relationship with a female so having some sort of obligation would make that easier, no pressure to escalate a situation for me at least.
With her living so far away it's easier to arrange when we'll see each other, so most other times I can go out and play football or study or whatever. I'm not really big into parties or anything, I seldom drink. I'm not the kind of person that gets really attached either so if for whatever reason she cheated or anything, I'd just break up with her and go back to the way I was. It may be different over the summer or something if we get closer but until then I'm not "close" to her. I like her a lot but I'm not putting myself out there. The distance relieves a lot of pressure for me.

Long distant relationships are actually becoming more and more apparent with the younger generation.... not so much high school, but there is an emerging trend for college students and even more so with recent college graduates. It has a lot to do with means of communication, ease or travel, the job market, and the desire for the younger generations to have more "me" time.

Yeah my biggest problem with relationships was girls wanting to be together constantly. With college especially, I've just got **** to do. Living far apart gives me time to do all of that. And depending on when I get tickets, a bus, round trip, is less than $40. If all we do is walk around the city (and sex ) and get pizza or whatever that's cheaper than having a gf nearby.
She's not my girlfriend though, haha, I'm not trying to tread into that territory yet. We're in that weird "obligated to one another but don't want to title it" stage.

Those stages are sometimes pleasant... other times awkward. Another thing with long distance relationships is the amount of time they take. Since you see each other less and you interact with each other with the normal daily grinds you actually to to know each other slower and the relationships typically progress much, much slower.
P.S. JP, don't be so mopy
