Creatine Faq

There seems to be a lot of confusion throughout the bb community on what creatine does, I know because before I looked around I thought it was some "Magic" supplement.

Creatine is a naturally occurring substance, its formula is C4H9N3O2. Widespread usage of creatine popped up in the 1990's when it was made known that many olympic runners had used it.

On to the actual effects of creatine.

Creatine can either be taken in a loading phase, which includes taking 20g of creatine for the first week of supplementation, spread out at 4 intervals throughout the day, each with 5g of creatine. This method has not been proven to be more effective than normal 5g a day consumption. Basically, take 5g a day after you workout with your protein shake.

Some say that it is necessary to cycle creatine, some say that it isn't. To be on the say side it is generally acceptable to take creatine for one month, and then take ~2 weeks off.

So, how does creatine actually work? When your body needs energy it expends ATP(adenine triphosphate), and this reaction creates ADP(Adenine diphosphate). What creatine does is it donates its one phosphate to create another ATP molecule, thus giving you more energy.

No, creatine will not make you huge overnight, the easiest way to explain the benefits of creatine are as follows, if you could do 9 reps of a set, maybe you will be able to pump out 10 reps.

Will I lose my gains after I stop taking creatine? No, this is a fairy tale, the only thing you will lose after you stop creatine supplementation is a few pounds of water weight.

Can my kidneys or liver be hurt? If you take 200g of creatine in one serving, then yes you will hurt your kidneys, but that is the same with any substance. There is no science stating that creatine is harmful. The only side effect you can say is slight water retention, which is combatted easily by increased water consumption.

I thought it was too. I was expecting to come in here and read a rant about how some *** as his high school gym uses creatine and now lifts more than him but he's cheating so it doesn't count.
