Sorry, I've been in the Philippines. Can you give me an SST update

So, I used the search, found some pics and comments, etc. I'm just looking for a confirmation of what I found.

It seems that the SST is not well liked, tends to be below par, and I'd be better off with a sidewinder, 2-liter, or 2-liter plus. Dan says the SST creeps and has little flow.

Am I correct?

I personally use Sidewinders. Proven track record, easy to disassemble and easy to maintain. More than enough flow for any marker out there. Back in the day they were used in Battle Bots for the assault mechanisms. Lots of throughput with enough force to make the hammers/hatchets very effective. Another point is that the Hyper series regs are pretty much direct copies.
Sidewinder.

i used a gun for the day that had the sst reg. (i used a guys viking for the day and he used my excalibur which had a sidewinder). we both shot +-7 fps at worst using fyre paint.

we both shot uncapped semi with our bounce filters low. I didnt notice any dropoff or terrible flow that affected shooting at 11-15bps (probably what i was doing).

Is it worth the extra $ probably not i would just buy a 2 liter if i want the best. Is it bad enough where you will be annoyed that you bought it while playing, I dont think so.

My problem with the 2 liter is you can't disassemble for routine maintenance and there's no swivel for personal hose placement. The small amount of extra flow isn't worth the $20 to me especially since it was redesigned causing less flow than the original.

Yeah that's true that swivel line out the side is a pain . I had a new 2 liter on my pm5 and it was really nice but wound up switching back to the hyper 2 because it was easier to hold .

I haven't put 100,000 shots or so through one hpr so being able to rebuild them easily isn't a huge factor ( personally I don't mind CPs also they are easy to get apart ). But how often do you think An average player who plays once a weekend shooting a case needs to service their hpr ?

I'm not doubting you but I'm curious as to why, if the Hyper regs are copies of the Sidewinder, their performance isn't as good. I've rarely seen consistent Dye regs, is that where AKA's quality and good tolerances comes into play?

TDK! your back!!!

Im not sure about the creeping, but i wonder if that has to do with regulator break in time, or maybe Dan's just happeend to have someting wrong with it that caused it to creep, or maybe it was just dirty. AKA claims its flow is 3x greater than that of the Sidewinder, but i havent owned one. I was speaking with Larry and all he could do was rave about it, he seemed to love it more than the Sidewinder.

Yeah, I reckon the only one that could give a PERFECT answer on this one is Aaron himself, but I'm pretty sure that Dan's word is a wise one. Almost any high class reg these days will do good enough. I also reckon that most high class regs these days are knock-offs of the sidewinder such as cp, macdev, dye, etc. They all are pretty much the same design just tweaked in a few different ways from what I can tell. Thanks for the good answers guys. Now I just have to get my tank re-hydro tested and pray that it hasn't seized up after 2 years

There's results with the SST in the DM7 tests section. Sidewinder and SST seems to do equally poor in there. I think I've read he used a tank with output set to around 500psi. I wonder how that would influence the results and how a 850psi output tank would make these regs performs compared to the others. Dan, any thoughts on that, was the sidewinder designed to be run with a HP tank output?

No wonder those test didn't come up very good. lp output is as much crap as the company that started the craze.

I have used an sst for over the past year. I had one small leak that required me to tear it down, and reassemble (there was nothing wrong just a little dirt/dust/something in there) but other than that I have been pleased. I have put @ 15 cases through it. IMO it is just as good as any other AKA reg. My viking shoots +-2 across the chrono every time I check it.

well didnt bob long find that really low tank pressure helped efficiency or something on the g6r. and he worked with ninja to get their tank pressures even lower? i could have sworn he said that in the g6r video when he was sitting at an office desk.

I'll be in Provo in a few weeks. I still need to re-hydro test though.
