Larger people have larger potential.
Rarely do people ever reach their full potential. That can be said for anything.

This analogy may explain it for you - its like your using a shovel. You have the handle on one end, the force is applied to the other and your other arm is somewhere in between. The closer your other arm is to the load - the easier it will be lift it.
Now translate this to doing curls. The force is applied at your hand, the handle is at your elbow, and "your other hand" is where your brachialis/biceps inserts onto your forearm. Common sense tells me that the longer your arm is, the further away "your other hand" (insertion of muscles) is going to be from the load. i.e. - harder to lift.
This is about as factual - no bull**** speculation I can get.

Shorter people will have a mechanical advantage.

Every pound of mass a short person adds translates into a larger cross sectional area of musculature on their body. This is a inverse square relationship.
Tall people can carry more muscle mass overall because muscle mass is cubed as a function of height.
This means your overall potential is on a line that follows height^(3/2)
http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=x^%283%2F2%29
However, if a short person and a tall person adds mass at the same rate, you'll find that the short person gets stronger faster (greater cross sectional growth, shorter levers, less ROM), and also looks significantly more "swole".
Arguments about height affecting potential can be framed in different ways. A tall person's ceiling (naturally and unnaturally) is higher than a short person's, but the short person may actually be able to gain strength faster due to shorter levers.

at the top levels smaller dudes lift more weight lb for lb. obviously more of their lbs are muscle and they dont have to move the weight as far. but yes you are right smaller dudes are smaller to start.

Go back and read every thread and then maybe you could make a more appropriate response.

It makes sense that taller people will lift more if they were two people who don't lift at all that is.
My opinion is once lifting shorter people have it easier, there not as tall so they don't go down as far on squats, they don't have to bring up the weight as far for deadlift and normally taller people have longer arms so they have to go farther down fir benching

I bet those longer arms help alot with shortening their deadlift movement breh.

Now what? See, in this case, I feel like tall people have more potential to be stronger overall. Filling out the frame is harder, but IF it does indeed get filled out, wouldn't the taller guy lift way more weight due to overall more surface area of muscle? Granted there is still a lot of bone mass, but shouldn't the length of the muscles compensate for this?
|
thats hard to compare because the ht/wt isnt comparable between the 2. the 5'6 guy is 2.72 pounds per inch, the 6'5 guy is 3.37. so the 6'5 is proportionally bigger.

true, because the heights and weights arent proportional
a person who is 6'5 260 is proportipnal to someone who is 5'6 222. someone who is 5'6 222 is probably going to be able to lift more i'd say.
and someone whos 5'6 180 is proportional to someone whos 6'5 210. i think that one would be closer.
im 6'3, and id say being short helps for sure. lets take bench as an example. im assuming most of you go down to your chest? when some short people who go down to their chest their elbows are right around a 90* angle, but if i go down to my chest i'm well past 90. so not only would i have a longer distance, but also a larger range of motion too.

Larger people have more mass. Therefore they have more muscle and can move more weight. Shorter arms and legs do help lifting but having more muscle and stronger ligaments/joints/etc allow you to lift more. This is a fundamental relationship you should see in weight classes which are inevitably going to deal with people of progressing heights as you go higher. The taller people are, the more potential they have, the bigger they can lift. Period. End of story. Adding mass at the same rate means nothing to me. Unrelated to the discussion.

is that what they stood at normally or cut to? and how strong were they compared to each other?
and i think this thread is drifting more towards heavier people lift more weight. someone whos taller isnt necessarily heavier. someone who is 6'5 210 is probably weaker than someone whos 5'5 210.

Someone who is 5'5" 210 probably can't tie their own shoes and looks like a mini Ronnie Coleman or Java The Hut.
That is their competition weights for all 3 bb'rs
