Help me pick a new pc

For around $500. Nothing super fancy, just enough to do the job. All it has to do is the occasional game, movie, and lots of internet surfing. Laptops or PC.

Occasional game as in..?
Many laptops and PC can do everything but gaming, it really depends on what type of gaming you are doing. But if your concerned about gaming, I'd get a desktop but if gaming is not a priority, then there are tons of choices. I personally prefer ASUS or Toshiba.

some newer laptops are coming out with some ati or nvidia mobile graphic chipset. for the money you get more from a desktop then a laptop. you can build your own pc for 600.00 or buy a pre built and just toss in a video card.
for 600.00 you be looking at a amd system with a 2 core cpu. like the 555 black.
the rest is going to be on the parts you pick up. (ram/hd/case and cpu or combo deal.). plus the os. the 4850 cards (last year are under 100.00 now and will play most games without lagging.).

Interesting. Gaming isn't a huge priority.

I'm just using a horribly outdated laptop that is incredibly slow. I need an ugrade.

Whats the deal with these new i3, i5, and i7 processors from intel? Are they really good? I found a sony viao for $600 today with 4gb of ram and an i3 processor. 500gb internal hdd as well.

Asus and Apple are the best ways to go right now. Sony has been having some serious QC problems in my area, at least. Most of the Sony's we've sold have come back the same or next day with a burnt out CPU fan/fried mobo.

it was intel new way of trying to make money from low end chips that amd was beating them on. the numbers go down itel makes the chips more dump or crippled. (no hyper threading or speed steeping).

The i3 is a dual-core CPU that is considered the "lower end" of the i# line, but it's still very good (It's clocked at 2.93 GHz or something like that).

The i5 is another dual-core, and it's the "mid-grade".

The i7 is a quad-core and it's pretty much towards the top, if not THE top, of the current chip selection today.

I have an older HP pavilion laptop and its worked great thus far. Just curious about the newer ones. The one I am looking at has an AMD turion dual core processor.

HP just came out with some new metal laptops. They have i3 i5 and i7 cpu's. The HP Dm4 looks really nice but I haven't seen any reviews for them. They look pretty good spec wise if you can take the plunge and buy it on good faith it may prove to be an excellent laptop.

If you want a proven well made laptop get an asus.

google search is your best friend on that. some models and some vendors end up with a crappy run. some hp had weak power plugs and had a know recall.also some vendors like hp when the know nvidia laptop chip issue was know did not swap or give unit owners an extended warranty to cover mb with bad video chips. a lot of web pages have said asus laptops are well built.

I took a look at fry's today. There was a huge selection, which was nice.

I think I will go with acer, HP, asus, or gateway.

Wow, thank you!

I guess I'll go for Asus or Toshiba now. I trust CNET.

Manufacturers pay CNET quite a bit of money for biased reviews so they're pretty much worthless.

Really? I have always had really good luck with purchases based on Cnet reviews (routers, MP3 players, phones, TVs, etc).

What review source would you recommend?

That report isn't first hand from CNET though, they're from SquareTrade.

NotebookReview or any other place that compiles multiple review sources per item are usually reliable. I'm just saying don't rely on one place.
