Major Computer Trouble

Hey guys, I need some help. Very simply, a few minutes after my computer boots, the screen outright freezes. I have no idea what would be the cause of this. I had the task manager open to monitor the CPU and crap until it froze several times, but no key information, I don't think, was divulged. It doesn't do it when in safe mode. That's how I'm writing this. You think it could be a virus?

And, what does safe mode exclude that makes it particularly "safer" than normal mode?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am running Windows 7 and have already done a System Restore twice to two different days before the problem occurred. The problem persists.

its most likely a virus. if you can, get an external and move all your important stuff to that, then reformat. Its your best bet.

Well, Mr. ἔρως-φιλία-ἀγάπη, safe mode is safer because it doesn't allow certain windows functions to boot up, which are usually the ones infected by the virus. Or something like that.

Here.

I doubt it's a virus. Check the event viewer in safe mode.

Safe mode will only load the most basic files needed to run your system. There are a ton of things you can do from there. You should definitely be checking for a previous restore point and attempt to load it. Also the ability to run a virus scan properly. Event viewer will have logs of any recent activity and possibly tell you where something went wrong. Also try Last Known Good Configuration when spamming F8 at start up.

Good Luck.

This problem has gotten much more deeper since I made this thread. If I open windows normal mode, it might freeze, or it might do blue screen of death before it freezes. I don't know what the hell is on my computer that is screwing it up so badly, but I have consulted some other websites and google searches and have decided by best bet at being able to use my computer again in normal mode will be to recover the system. Not system restore, but system recovery. I'm doing it tomorrow. I am moving everything I need to another source to put back on my computer after. Anyone have anything to say that they think I should know? I am going to recover it tomorrow after school.

You say when you open windows normally it has those problems. What happens when you boot in safe mode Mr. ἔρως-φιλία-ἀγάπη?

I'm assuming you've done a virus scan before Windows boots up? worth a shot.

I managed to get a system restore far enough back so that running in normal mode works. But I'm still going to restore to factory defaults. On that topic... anyone know how to do that? I've searched and tried a few ways, but all to no avail.

if it a pre built system most times you hiy a f key at boot or change the boot order to restore or there a short cut in windows to start it.
