Can't connect to wired Internet

Hi I'm using a Gateway running windows vista home premium and I can't connect my computer to the internet. I have my Verizon FiOS modem connected to my coaxial and the wireless portion of my intenet works (iPod touch works) but when I connect an Ethernet cable to my computer and modem on any port, it cannot connect. The computer does not have built in wireless so that is out of the question. The computer also does not recognize any network hardware and when I use the FiOS disk to set up the network it tells me to go to (on IE) 192.168.1.1 but IE tells me the adress is not valid. How can I get my comp to recognize the connection?

Try unplugging it and plugging it back in, use a different cable, check if your NIC is installed properly.
Is it even showing up in your device manager?

Alright guys I've tried 3 or 4 cables and every port on the damn modem and nothing seems to be working. It doesn't even display a LAN as disconnected, it just doesn't exist! I tried the wizard and install CD for the modem, both to no avail. Even in device manager it isn't there!

Then you need the drivers for your NIC. They can be found on Gateway's site or on one of the discs that came with your computer.

Alright thanks everyone. What I'll do is put the drivers on a flash drive from another computer then install them on my gateway.

Maybe you thought you connected the wire, but never really did?

That's what I thought when I read the thread. Seems pretty difficult to not connect if you're wired.

That verizon disk is probably the software for the modem, you need the drivers for you motherboard (if the NIC in onboard).
