I wouldn't worry too much about the APFT, especially if it is your first one for ROTC.

They might even be expecting you to be in poor shape being a normal civilian.

But it really helps to be able to run.
Alot of people here might agree with me when I say that if you can run well, it makes you look really good compared to your peers. Your ability to run well, or faster than everyone else, will make you stand out.
So, for in the future, be sure to improve that aspect.

push ups: the widen the stance thing as you get tired is definitely a good tip. also the rules say that you can place your feet up to 12 inches apart. DO IT! i found that when i did that i got about 10-15 extra push ups.

sit ups: just fall back, just like with push ups, people try to control falling back and wear out their muscles and tire themselves out. just flop back and explode back up.

run: yeah, i just zone out when i run, go into my happy place. i used to be a ****ty runner (like 14:30's), now i'm pretty decent (13:30's now), but i would focus too much on running technique and breathing. ever since i started zoning out, i'm blowing runs out of the water.
