If the US had more than one decent striker, things would be looking alright.

yea, 1,000-1 is better that 5,000 to 1. As much as I would like the US to make a great run, and eventually actually compete on an international level, my money is on the US getting out of the groups, but no further than the first knockout game.
I was going to pick Germany as a sleeper finalist, but without Ballack, that pick is much more shakey now.

USA will probably make the quarters if they get a good draw coming out of the group stages.
But until they find a coach who is not one of the good old boys that employs the same tactics as high school coaches around the country and starts utilizing our talent and finding new talent then we will be in the same boat. It is a pity that there are so many domestic players that never get a chance because of our flawed ODP system.

I would hate for Diego Maradona to win the World Cup as a manager. He barely even qualified what was one of the top 5 teams in the World.
I would like to see Spain and England duke it out at some point. That would truly settle quite a few arguments about who is the best. The rest of the teams can all be considered underdogs to those two.

Lost my old account.

I had my world cup draw last night, I had the fourth pick and Spain fell into my lap, ESPANA SIEMPRE! (Brazil, England, Germany, and Italy were picked before my pick)

Anything who thinks USA is making it past the Round of 16 is hilarious, simply put. Spain, Portugal, and Brasil are my top 3 picks.

Aaron - England? I dunno how you could possibly say that Brazil or Germany are underdogs in comparison to them. They've proven nothing.

I was thinking that same thing the other day. It would change the American mindset about soccer completely. It would literally just shatter anyone's predisposed notions about the national team, ahhhh it would be so amazing.

Current form of the individual players my friend. I know it does not make a team, but right now the players on the English and Spanish teams are in excellent form. Although Spain does have some injury problems as well as England.
England has rolled through teams since Capello took over so it is not really easy for them to prove anything since their last manager failed to get them to qualify for the Euros.
Germany and Brazil both have the toughest qualifying groups out of the 4. Germany has some big injuries and Brazil has some players that were less than stellar for club, plus Dunga's whole revamp seems to be unsettling to what the players really want to do. All of that puts those two as underdogs for me.
Plus someone has to be an underdog.

I dunno if I see England making a run. For whatever reason - call it a gut feeling - I see them disappointing once again. But, as is always the case in international tournaments, if Brasil plays well, they'll win.

It's still silly to call Brazil an underdog. Ridiculous really considering Brazil's results against England.

As a Chelsea fan I'm telling you, Ballack is useless and Germany si better of without him. He's not the player he once was and should frankly retire, 33 is too old in today's fast paced game. I do feel sorry for him though, it sad to see him have to finish off this career on this note:
