regular squat w/ bar and using a machine ..any difference?
ok so me and my friend both lift and he has a squat machine in his basement and i squat at school like regular with the regular 45 lb bar and spotters.
My question is... lets say i squat 225 with no machine just using the bar and the weights is that harder than squatting 225 using the machine?
i personally think it is easier with the machine but my friend still doesnt think so.
So does anybody know for sure.
also do you get the same work out ? does it exercise the same muscles?
i know this might be a stupid question but im just wondering

Machines are nice if you have bad form/preventing injury or if you're lifting alone, but free weights are better for strength because they utilize more muscles for stabilization, etc.
Machines are fine if you're lifting lower weights, or are inexperienced, but there is a point you can reach where free weights are primarily what you're going to use.

it's much easier to squat using a machine.

Tell your friend to stop squatting using a damn smith machine (guessing what he is doing).
It is known that anyone who thinks they are better than someone else because they move more weight on the smith machine then that person does with free weights is a moron.

Smith machines are a joke. The only thing they're good for is going heavy when you don't have a spotter.

Even then, most gyms have access to a power rack, which I do all my squatting.

I'd even go as far to say that a power rack is much safer than a smith machine.

Your friend is wrong about the squats on the machine being harder then squatting dead weight. Usually a Smith machine gives enough assistance that the bar should be around 15 lbs of resistance instead of 45
