I can't really speak to laptops since I've only had macbooks. I've definitely seen more stupid problems in Windows and OS X desktops than I've ever seen in my numerous Linux boxes. I consider a stupid problem one that has no straight-forward or clear solution. Linux continually impresses me with how awesome it is. I've banged my head against the wall with Windows and things such as software RAID in OS X. When dealing with Linux there's significantly better documentation and tools to deal with the problem. In a proprietary OS you have to wait for Microsoft or Apple to do something about it.

The only reason why I have to dualboot right now is because my school uses some software that requires a Windows computer. Next year in college I'll hopefully be able to make the switch over to 100% Linux, but we'll see.

I think I have a very basic question:
Main PC: core i7, yadyada ..
New netbook: dell mini 10
took off windows 7 starter, installed ubuntu 10.04
i would like to connect to my windows 7 machine on my netbook to play my music stored in an already shared itunes folder
location is \\DAVID-PC\Users\David\Music\iTunes
I do not know how to go about doing this
it is not under windows network in 'places>network' nor can i set up a windows share under 'places>connect to server...'
halp?

Are you trying to connect to an iTunes share or a Windows share?

I was trying to connect to a windows share.
I want to play music from my windows7 PC without adding the 50GB on music onto my netbook.
What would be the most efficient way to go about doing this?

The Samba package provides the ability to connect to Windows fileshares. You can use the basic 'mount' command to get access:
Code:
mount -t smbfs -o username=username,password=password //win-box/network/share /path/to/mount/point
You can test to see if you have samba working:
Code:
smbclient -L windows-box -U username
If the above doesn't give you what you expect, you can install Samba following the instructions for software installation for your distro.
There are lots of instructions on Google for connecting to a Windows share from a Linux box if this is insufficient.

I'm sorry, I don't know what your GUI is doing. That's why I didn't suggest moving your cursor to button X and clicking Y times.

No word back from F5 for a few weeks, but I've accepted an offer from a local engineering firm. It's going to be microcontrollers and embedded Linux and jank for me. Thanks anyway.

Just got my first Linux OS.
It's nice, but confusing so far.

Welcome aboard. Do you actually mean confusing, or is it just different? What's got you confused?

I guess the more correct term would be different.
Trying to establish all my programs again, and not having things download and work properly has taken its tole on me over the past day or so.

If you're on Ubuntu, you just have to type this command:
Code:
sudo apt-get install [program name]
Everything should pretty much just work.

I don't mean to come off like an ***, but there is no way anyone can (or would want to) help you with your problem if you don't give them any information about it. We need as detailed description of the issue as you can provide.
EDIT: Ubuntu ships with a bunch of applications by default. Did you find them unsatisfactory? Installing Amarok (which uses Qt libraries) in a Gtk environment such as yours is not something I would do unless you either know that you can't live without it or have a bunch of other Qt applications already.
