Media Passes for 2010 and how this works:

So every year / event i get requests for "Media" Passes. This thread will explain exactly who qualifies for one and who does NOT qualify for one - so please read this carefully.

To Qualify:

1) You MUST be working with an ACTUAL Media Outlet. You must provide credentials for said media outlet and some one who works for this media outlet must be willing to vouch for you WELL in advance of events.

You are NOT Qualified if you:

1) show up the day of asking for a media pass
2) you are "with" _________ team
3) you are someones parent / brother / uncle / grandma / cousin and want to go in the net to get better pictures
4) You have to have a pass because Team ________ is paying you to follow them around and take pictures of them.

Please understand that the reason we do not just hand out media passes to anyone who asks, or put a "price" on a media pass is because our first responsibility is to preserve the integrity of the game.

Anyone looking to obtain a Media Pass should email me directly and should include the following information:

1) Your Name
2) The company you represent
3) The name of the person we can contact to confirm that you are working for this company
4) The purpose of the photos / video (print / web site / for teams etc.)
5) where we can expect to find your work

My email address is TheNEPL@Gmail.com

Please be advised that in some situations - you may be more qualified as a vendor than media - and we will work with you in the best way we can to represent your company at the NEPL events in 2010.

Thank you
Lori

What is the definition of "media outlet"? Technically any website could be considered a "media outlet", but then anyone could get a pass just by setting up a website.

This sounds like neither Visually Implied nor Phamous would be able to shoot unless they were shooting for someone like FaceFull, propaintball.com, etc.

on the flip side of this, it cuts down on the "well the photographer was helping them out by giving away our positions" rant if the media people are held accountable and everyone is clear on what they are doing on the field. I know this was mentioned last year by some of the 5man teams.

not to start anything, but to get money and sponsorships from companies they want to see their names/companies being represented in the media.

if youre prohibiting people from taking pictures/videos then this doesnt happen and thats why the sport of paintball isnt being represented enough by outside companies.

I'd like to know this as well...for obvious reasons.

This should have NO effect on that "aid" "issue", because it wasn't a recurring problem. It was an isolated incident by one really stupid individual. I haven't met a single other NEPL photographer, or photographer in paintball, for that matter, who actually has given away or attempted to give away a position. "Media outlet" is far too broad a term. I understand some restriction, but I have never witnessed the problem in years past.

People aren't being prohibited from taking pictures.

I think they want to prohibit people just taking pictures for the hell of it(AKA: Like I did at event 5)

The way it reads it seems like Jdev or Phamous dudes wouldn't be allowed, but that would be retarded if that was true so I assume it isn't.

This isn't a huge thing - it's pretty much the same stance we've always taken when it comes to allowing anyone on the fields, I just want it to be clear what in fact a "Media" pass is. Some people think that because they have a MySpace / Facebook / SmugMug page and a camera - that they should be allowed on the fields to take pictures - and we are simply not giving passes to those who are under this impression. Those we do allow on the fields to take pictures are people we trust to do their work the proper way and are there covering the events.

We have never had an issue with JDev or Phamous being on the fields, and I do not anticipate having one with them this season - but there are many out there who think that they fall into that same special category - and they may be mistaken.

Bottom line is this - I do not want to see anyone offering to take pictures for teams, trying to bank a few dollars by doing so - under the impression that they will just be handed a "media pass" to do so. It has become enough of an issue that I felt it needed to be addressed. I am NOT in any way trying to prevent coverage of the league or the teams who play in it - I do however have the right to say who can be out there and know the reason they want to be - as again, the integrity of the league is my first and foremost concern.

Thanks for the clarification, Lori. The way the original post read, I thought VI and Phamous wouldn't be allowed. Really, they're just a few guys with a smugmug/picasa account. But, the difference with them is they have a proven track record for quality and trustworthy behavior.

Like Brendan said, there are alot of people who are still awaiting responses. We are trying to be patient but are just hoping that we are going to get a response before the event. Lori, is there anyway you could make another post updating the status of these responses?
