Best way to preserve loptop batterys life

I just got a new laptop and I have tried googleing it but I have read so many different things, should I leave it plugged in all the time when I am at home? Or should I let it die or close to dying then charge it? I have also read I should remove the battery when I am not using it but I cannot remove my laptop battery... so any help would be great

keep it well ventilated (cooling pad, or at least on a hard surface), heat will shorten the life pretty badly. full power cycles are good too, but keeping it cool will probably help more.

I keep my battery out when it's plugged in, the constant charging/draining is what wears on the life, even the best Lithium Ion batteries lose a little life each charge, so best to keep it out if possible

Keep it cool, plug it in whenever you can. Don't do full discharge/charge cycles because idiots tell you to. it's not good for the battery.

Who in their right mind would buy a non-Apple laptop with a sealed battery?

Certain battery techs do need to be cycled. They form a memory that can degrade capacity levels if not well maintained. I don't remember the certain tech but it's the same for all types of batteries that use that tech, laptops, power drills, rechargeables, ect.

Ni-Cd are pretty bad about it, Li-ion not so much, but if you take it to the extreme (leave it plugged in 24/7 and not well ventilated), you're going to end up like my old thinkpad, which has about 30 minutes of battery life, if the graphics chip doesn't overheat and spaz out first.

I found an old XP laptop in my basement and in the BIOS was an option to relearn the battery, which I did, and it gave me a few hundred mAh. It's not going to help if you do it every weekend but after a few months you'll be surprised at the amount of charge you gain.

Was it you who went on the rant (years ago) about the differences between treatment of LiIon and NiCad and the misconceptions that people have? I feel like it may have been.

From what I've read, you only want to do a full charge-discharge cycle on Li-Ion/Polymer devices every once a month or when the capacity gauge is way off. Does that sound about right?

Probably. A lot of people seem to think you should only deep cycle (as opposed to shallow cycle) lithium batteries, drives me nuts.

Yeah, it'll reset the capacity readings. Interval depends on usage, obviously, and it won't do anything for the actual capacity.
