those are steel, and not aluminum... are you familiar with plating aluminum?

Seems like the shop I posted will PVD almost anything; metal, ceramic, glass, plastic or composite.

I've read enough to know it can be tougher than other metals. However some of the prices ODD and others want to charge is outrageous compared to other shops I've looked into. Aluminum may be harder to do but it isn't impossible. As long as the person doing it is a professional and not attempting it in his garage.

I stripped one of the eclipse aurora barrel tips the other day for a customer and I was surprised on the way it stripped. The coating came off instantly revealing the chrome plate underneath.

Fix it yourself by wearing down the plating on the threads or chase with correct tap/die. I would not consider something that trivial as ruining a gun. Now a hole in an air chamber is different.(ie. severe pitting in the stripping process)

if the barrel threads are a problem imagine what a problem you will have when you try to screw in your lpr or ram cap or event eh threads on your feedneck..... trust me I know what Im talking about.... I worked with aurora for a year before I did a full gun.... its not a zippo lighter, its a highly pressured, tightly machined, and tolerance sensitive machine that needs to fit together very tightly....

So cutstep, how thick is your "aurora" coating?

The aurora coating itself is not very thick at all. It's the fact that most Aluminum parts are chrome/nickel plated first to give the really high gloss. Chrome plating is very thick and can mess with tolerances. Which I am assuming is were Cutstep is coming from.
The thing is PVD of Ti can be done on bare aluminum and on anodized aluminum, it just requires some different chemicals to produce the vapor. Some companies may do it, some may not.

Just another reason why this type of coating is not a functional coating at all (for paintball)
Every gun I have seen with it that has been played with is beat to hell, and the coating is chipping/flaking off.
If you want to have the gun hang above your fireplace, this is the coating for you.

That's interesting compared to the 11 or some odd I would expect. How did you manage that?
