Building an arcade cabinet

I've been meaning to do this for quite a while, I just never got to it because I was lacking in parts.

I want to use a computer as the brains behind it, something that would work well for multiple old games (I'm talking MULTIPLE). I've already got the system, I just need the software. How would I go about doing this?

(I also would rather like to use my CRT monitor...thing has been lying around here for too long for no reason)

Does anyone know where I should start with building an arcade cabinet like this?

A simple frame and a good deal of MDF.

What are you planning on using to control it?

What types of games are you talking about?

Controlling it? Joysticks and buttons. I've seen plenty of old arcade interfaces online that can be plugged into USB for a decent amount.

Types? Old-school. **** like Pac-Man, Galaga n ****. Na meen?

EDIT: The only thing I'm really concerned about is the front-end. Does an arcade "OS" exist?

the best you're probably going to get is an emulator that can play all the games for system "x" unless you code it yourself. my friend built one, and he just has a pull-out keyboard/mouse tray under the joysticks/buttons surface. runs XP, starts the emulator, and since the joysticks and buttons are mapped to keys, i think you can use those from there.

Gah.

Fair enough. I guess I don't want to get that into it for right now.

Maximum PC or PC gamer ran an article about this a month or two ago. Lemme find my issue and I'll let you know what month it was it. May have some helpful pointers.

It's called a MAME... and there are programs that run on top of Windows / with Media Center...

http://mamedev.org/

Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator... this is specifically for emulating Arcade systems, not consoles. But it can do those if you implement the console emulators.

It's a long painful process to get it all setup, but once you do it... it's quite awesome.

If you could, that'd be excellent.

Though as stated above, for an arcade machine MAME would be best. Puppy arcade wound require too much clicking around for an arcade cabinet. I'm just throwing this here since someone said Linux.
