ask a liberal arts student anything.

Yep, so my future employment options are pretty damn limited...

but no worries, because i think i enjoy school a little more than most and hell, maybe i'll be little more well rounded by the end of all this. I think its important to jump through the hoops to earn respect and credibility from others. I study philosophy and i'm a business minor. here in my 4th year of school at UT austin. i'll be done in 3 semesters.

ask away!

I hope you're not saying that your future options are limited because you're getting a philosophy degree and not because you're getting a liberal arts education...

It depends on the field you're going into, but it seems that businesses prefer their CEO's and presidents to have liberal arts educations as opposed to technical educations. If you want to be a peon, go ahead and go to a state school or technical school.

Who/what are you taking, and who/what have you taken for your philosophy classes?

(I'm a junior at UT:A in philosophy; relevant to interests and whatnot.)

My school is liberal education. It's kinda annoying, you have to take all sorts of random classes unrelated to your major, including a "thematic sequence" that is essentially a minor in something comepletly offtopic. But usually those classes are lay-up A's compared to the usual chem e classes I take so I don't mind it too much

i'm finishing up this semester with Krecz who teaches business ethics and Hankinson for early modern philosophy with Descartes, Hume, and Berkeley.

I've also had Bonevac's intro class... he was a badass. and I took another course my sophomore year that i can't remember the name of.

take Krecz if you get the chance... he's an interesting man with a lot to say.

Philosophy teaches more than how to be a philosopher. It teaches critical thinking, logic, and problem solving.

I didn't mean it was bull****, I said it was a ******* major. As in, what can this degree be used for? Are there any well paying jobs (50k out of school) that look at Liberal Art majors?

In areas where political science is classified as a liberal arts major, there are certainly high paying jobs out there... Kind of... A significant amount of lawyers use PS as their undergraduate.

While I know a lot of people pick dumb/easy majors for the hell of it, some of us truly enjoy what we do and don't really care about the pay.

it's a diverse and progressive city. a lot to do here socially.
texas is one of the richest states (if not the richest) in the union and Austin is in the center of it all.

college city with an absurd amount of hot ladies.

that being said. i dig it.

I attent UNCW, which is a liberal arts school in north carolina. The one thing that I've noticed about the university in general is that it follows a lot of the ideals of the Italian Renaissance and Humanist movements. I, as many others, have to take a lot of courses that are unrelated to my business major, but as a whole they've all helped me look at the world in a different way, become a little more down to earth and aware of things and have overall opened my mind to a lot of diversity.

Philosophy at first seems dumb but it all depends on how you look at the class and use it for yourself (self interpretation, a great ideal). Although my philosophy professor lectures until new year's and is never wrong about anything, his class has been very beneficial to me as a person this semester.

just my 2 cents.

Eh. A lot of people go that route, but those people are typically the lawyers coming from state schools, working for the government/small firms making $60,000. PS isn't a very good major for law school.

And this is one of the concerns that have been expressed about higher education in its current state: that it's more of a white-collar trade school than an institution of academia.

But to answer your question, no, there are no liberal arts majors that regularly place a graduate in high paying jobs. Maybe economics does, but meh.

My BA degree will be just about worthless unless I go to law school... other than that I could be a cop or a paralegal...

That's the plan for me, and why I chose philosophy instead of something "useful" or easy. I'm counting on philosophy to help me with my LSAT scores.

I'm a legal studies and pre-law double major and a political science and CJ double minor... I can't wait to take the LSATs...

Where are you thinking of going to law school?
