Street Teams for bands/record companies?

Have any of you ever been on one? Not ones for lame bands like All Time Low, I mean bands that actually need promotion. What's it like? What do you do?

I did a lot of promoting for friends' bands when I lived in Hawaii. It mostly involved placing promotional materials, posting flyers, and just generally getting "the word" out.

You need to know a lot of slang and not be afraid of a criminal record.
