Well i took my used(new to me) ion out to the field on Saturday. The gun has only used once, but the previous owner never took it apart(thus it was a b i t c h to take apart) and let it sit for nearly a year.

Once i got to the field to try her out it became a nightmare. My PSI was about 100 and my fps was only like 140 so i raised it up to 180 psi and got about 280. Everything was fine and dandy until i started unloading and noticed after about two or three rapid shots, my balls dropped nearly right in front of my feet. I read the manual and it stated the regulator seat could be damaged or the SFT o-ring is damaged. What are those two pieces? The book doesn't distinguish the two.

I'll probably be getting a CP reg, but right now i need a new hopper(another thing that broke on my wonderful saturday)

(my batteries were new, dwell should be fine(it was fully cycling), and the paint was decent and the tank was full and worked fine on other guns)

SFT o-ring is in the breech.


Don't get a cp, it's a downgrade from stock. That's not an opinion, it literally recharges SLOWER than the stock reg.

Change your battery, check that o-ring, set your dwell. Should fix 'er right up.

The SFT o-ring is inside the breech between the feedneck and the barrel.

The reg seat is obviously in the regulator.

If you're gonna replace the reg, look at the DYE Hyper 2, they can be found new for $40, and are way better than a CP.

Try adjusting the dwell properly.

Okay i'll check out that new reg. I'll disassemble my reg and check out the o-ring

And my dwell was good(as it was cycling fully, i even dropped it, and raised it again just to make sure)

I sincerely doubt your reg is that problem

change the battery, check that o-ring, and set the dwell before you even think about taking the reg apart.

If it didn't do it... then did... Common sense. Your battery died.

Battery was BRAND NEW

But just to be safe, tomorrow i'll go and air it up with a different new battery and reset the dwell all over again, after checking out that oring

Do it again, to be sure. Like I said, it's probably NOT the reg. I've never really heard of anybody ****ing their reg seat in a stock ion reg.

you could also hit up your local paintball shop for some reg-oil...just remove the reg, poor a bit of oil down the macroline that feeds into the reg, reconnect the macroline to your on/off ASA, point into sink, and run some air through it...
I’ll do this once every 10 cases or so through my 2-liter

AKA regs use oil, SP regs and most others use grease. Oil in a stock ion reg is probably not a great idea.

I just checked all the orings and they are pristine.

I switched up the batteries. And tomorrow i'll see if it fixed it

Brand New Batteries that have been sitting around forever are still brand new but they are weak. It is a good idea to go to the local hardware store or Home Depot and buy yourself a cheap multi-meter. Throw it in your gear bag and the next time you encounter a problem, you can either identify or eliminate the battery as the source of the problem.

80% of problems with the Ion can be fixed by having a good "fresh" battery in it. The other 20% can be fixed by reading the owners manual.

Having a problem on the field is frustrating, but with an o-ring/hose kit, Dow 33 lube, the owners manual, a multi-meter and a couple of "fresh batteries" in your gear bag, you can be up and running in a matter of minutes.

The Ion solonoid does not like oil.

…good point, which is why I instructed to remove the reg and point it into the sink…also, it has been several years since I’ve used the stock reg…must have slipped my mind that it didn’t get oiled…thanks for the correction

Agreed. At my field sunday we went through 2 packages of brand new duracell's before pulling an old one out of my bag.

how much more efficient is a new reg comparred to the stock one... but what reg should be upgraded to?

Don't up threads that are 9 months old! A thread over a month old is considered dead and shouldn't be posted in unless it's a official picture thread or something of that sort.

This is an old thread, but to atleast answer your question the stock reg on the ion is actually very good. "Upgrading" to a CP is actually a downgrade in most cases. If you want a different reg due to cosmetic reasons go with the Hyper 2 or AKA 2-liter.
