Why Do Jewish Headstones Have Smaller Stones Placed On Them?

A few times in the past I've noticed rocks placed on top of headstones in Jewish cemeteries. I never really thought much about it, but today I passed a cemetery and saw this once again. I was just curious what the meaning behind it is.

a memorial tradition. When I was in Israel, at the holocaust museum, there was a children's memorial there. it was covered in small stones. there are a few "reasons", I believe the most common is to show that someone had visited the site. this might help:

it also shows how many people go and visit the grave and how you can tell if a person touched many people or many people loved them. And that was straight from a Rabbi at a cemetery in Long Island last August.

I know every time my family visits the cemetery we place stones on the headstones.

When I think of this, I immediately remember the film Schindler's List. They have a scene that shows this type of memorial and it's moving.
