Flag bases

Made 2 of these this morning

Very simple to make.

2 ~ 1 1/4" PVC pipes approx. 5' tall
2 ~ 1 1/4" PVE T fittings
2 ~ Eye Bolts
1 ~ Rope
4 ~ Flags(I used cheap hand towels)

Glue the T fitting to the top of the PVC pipe, drill a hole for the eye bolt and assemble.

Very simple but very effective flag bases.

Those ARE my favorite... But paint the top foot black. If the top of the flag color is NOT above that mark, then NEITHER SIDE has the flag up. Missions would be a draw no matter WHO occupied the base, or most of the base or whatever the base.

We have taken and occupied the base but couldn't get the flag up without getting killed first.

Witnessed several discussions about whether or not the flag is actually UP because the guy raising it got eliminated.

We've seen our spy raise the flag in the middle of a firefight without anybody inside the base noticing. So we just kept them busy and distracted until time expired for the mission and just claimed the points.

Night games make it difficult to use the flag but that is what flashlights are for. To check. Otherwise run missions that don't involve the flag. Go Destroy, Go assault, Retrieve the prop, etc.

With your design the flag will pull through the T fitting. You could require that color be SEEN on both sides of the T fitting. Same purpose...

But could you shoot the flag with a paintball and knock it out of the T fitting or down below the mark?

We've done that in rec ball capture the flag. Knocked it off the post and kept shooting it over to where one of our players can get it.

Never occured to try that in a scenario game until just now. Would that be OK or not...? Any opinions?

I like these. Some of the fields in my area should take note. placing a plunger handle into a hole a hair bigger than the diameter of the handle on a 2x4 above head level in the center of multiple firing lanes on either side is not a flag station. Just sayin. Some fields should take note.

What you could do for night missions is use green and red glowsticks for "flags" the high intensity 4 hour ones work wonders and they are not that expensivene and it could even be used on a similar rig to the one shown above

Just curious what you used for the base? What did the pvc pole attach to?

We used green fence posts, the metal kind you pound into the ground. Then used some zip ties to attach the pole. Makes it easy to move the bases if needed.

Just draping a flag over a branch to retrieve can be interesting. Get the flag and take it to the OTHER teams base. Field put one over the railing in the middle of a 25 foot long bridge over a dry creek bed. Totally exposed to run out there and grab the flag. The usual method was to play elimination and then get the flag.

You had to THINK. Pushed them back enough to get a couple of guys in the creek bed under the bridge. 6 tried, 2 made it.

They shot the flag off the railing and it fell onto the floor of the bridge. Then one of our guys up on the creek bank shot it some more and walked it over the edge and into the laps of the guys below. They put a golf ball sized rock inside the rag and gave a heave ho to one of our guys way down on the end of the fireing line.

MOST of the other team didn't notice the flag was gone. 3/4 of our guys had no clue either that the flag was gone. They didn't see anyone go onto the bridge and were too focused on what they were shooting at and ducking paint to take a peek at the flag once in a while.

It was interesting trying to get word to enough of our guys about the flag without tipping off the other side. Guys started to withdraw and go down to the flank and start pushing there. the ones that didn't get the message, kept the entire other side busy shooting at them.

Managed to break through the flank and sent a kid running like Heck for their base without a marker or anything.

Imagine everyone's surprise back at the bridge when the ref blew the whistle- game over...

We have used that small rock in the flag to toss the flag to where the other team has no clue where it is even if they saw a guy grab the flag initially.

We usually use flage in one of two ways. Often we will use the same setup as what BoomMaster sescribed. It keeps things interesting because it forces you to push into the enemy territory. We sometimes use a small rag for the flag, and other times we use a large pole. Keeps things interesting.

The other way that we use flags is in a game that we named Victor-Charlie. we use a series of thge same kind of flags shown in the above picture. These are posted along a well defined trail. The American side starts on one end and work their way through the flags, raising each one. To win, they must raise all the flags. The catch is that all of the living americans must stay as a group. The charlies only goal is to defend the flags. It is interesting to see the many different tactics that come from this game.
