Guns similar to g3 under $300?

Hey all. I'm trying to get onto the paintball scene and I really like the G3s. A few people at my local field have them and I like how they look and shoot. The only problem is, since I'm new I need to buy ALL my gear. Currently I'm looking to buy: Jersey, pants, elbow/knee pads, jt proflex mask, tank, hopper. That all is going to be rather expensive and I'm not looking to buy all of that AND spend another 300 on the G3 alone.

I'm wondering if there are any other guns that are similar to the g3, but easier on my wallet. I found a starter "set" that includes a Smart Parts ION, Pure Energy 3000psi 72ci N2 Tank, Viewloader Revolution loader, and Squeegee. This whole set only costs $246. I am however, a bit weary about buying an ION simply because I hear a lot of grumbling from people on the field about the IONs. Is there a problem with them? Would I be better off spending the money on a G3?

Also, if G3 simply is the best gun in that price range. Is there any type of starter sets floating around that include the G3? That way I can save a bit of money on the gun/tank/loader.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give me.

My suggestion is to buy a used bob long intimidator. They can be found very cheap now($200) and are great beginner guns for these reasons.

1. Little maintenance- These guns need lubing on the ram and reg about every 20 cases. thats it.

2. Simple Design- They are a similar design to a spyder which is arguably the simplest gun to take operate.

3. Timmy's are well known- Lots of people know and have owned timmies. If your gun breaks down, people at your field will likely be able to help you fix it if you can't do so yourself.

4. Customer Service- Bob Long (blast) service is great. not to mention the bob long sub forum here is full of helping people.

Then look at buying the rest of your gear in packages or here in the b/s/t forum.

ion is a great gun. people hate on it for little to o reason. with very few upgrades they are incredable shooters. and can be found crazy cheap. look used for any gun though. cheaper and have ups.

Dont buy a set.
Buy used, pick up a 68/4500 for $80ish
an Empire Reloader B2 for about $50ish, and then look for an older used highend.

PMR's are great guns that are mid end markers that dont cost too much.(250-300) theyre really light, arent too hard to maintain, and are very reliable. G3's are known to break very frequently. I shoot a PMR and i love it.
