Yeah they all have the same components underneath it's just the design and specs. Like my toshiba laptop has the ****tiest keys I've ever typed on. They are glossy and slippery if your hands are sweaty at all. I prefer a more matte finish and not a super shiny high techy finish. I didn't really have a choice in it so it's what I'm stuck with.

I wouldn't get a mini unless you also have a desktop. It will be good for basic typing/internet/etc and not much else. If you're going into an engineering/architecture program where you will use CAD or other engineering programs on your own computer you aren't going to want a mini/netbook type laptop.

I'd recommend hitting up the dell outlet mall for good deals on a normal laptop

I had a Toshiba. Worked fine for 4-5 years.
They seem to be good for the price and what you get.

1. you need to take the consumer report surveys with a grain of salt
2. it's worth your time to know a little bit about computers before you spend hundreds of dollars on one. ask yourself, "why does spec A work better for me than spec B"
3. you have 2-3 months to research. there are plenty of websites that provide useful information. Notebookreview.com and Notebookcheck.net are two places to start.
4. don't be like one of the clueless moms who overpays for computer services at best buy.
5. make your own decision, when you ask people for their opinions, you will get an answer with some degree of bias/personal preference.
6. in the end, it's your money.

As stated-wait until the end of summer to buy. Around the middle of August so it arrives before you go off to school.
Dell makes a good laptop. Regardless of what you end up deciding on be sure to pass it by here before purchasing it.

To be perfectly honest, anyone who can put Legos together can put a PC together.
