Please elaborate, because I for one just think that you want to be the one person in the flock who go's against the trend, or that you simply have no sense of humor.

I loved that book. I picked it up at B&N one day after reading a few pages and fell in love with it. Then, two months later I found out that its actually an AP English book at my school. Doesn't matter, still loved it. We get to read 1984 as our final book in senior english this year. I've already read it, and I swear if anyone complains abou that book, Im going to kick them in the head.

I didn't actually read it, but Rachel Carson's Silent Spring seemed pretty ****ty from the summaries I read of it. ~375 pages of "pesticides are bad mkay"

1984 is probably my favorite book ever. I think the reason I dislike Brave New World so much is it seems like it's a cheap take on the same stuff as 1984. It's very weak compared to 1984, no good characters, nothing too interesting or exciting. It's just very dull for a book with that type of subject matter.

Yes.Yes.Yes. Fagles' translation is beautiful just for that reason. Strange, it may be, but―I have the first line memorized in Fagles' translation and Greek (not that it's that hard to 'memorize'.).
Not sure about the accents, but
μήνιν ἄειδε, θεά, Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχίλληος,
It's translated that way because μήνιν means rage, but ἄειδε is the verb telling θεά (Muse/Goddess) to Sing about the rage of Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχίλληος (the Son of Peleus, Achilles).
So it's one of the more apparent issues we have with literary translation.
And second, μήνιν is pronounced manin (long a, as in tame), and it's feminine. The word isn't as cut throat as Rage. So, even though Fagle's translation is so much more gripping for it's opening line, it's kind of innaccurate. (you know, cuz it's Achilles' childish rage that costs lives and all.)
|
Hope you enjoy the read in Greek. I read the Aeneid in Latin while translating, it was a good and enjoyable time.

I absolutely love Wuthering Heights. It's probably my favorite novel

As for books I don't like, I couldn't get into Achebe's Things Fall Apart, but I still view it as an esteemed work. The Scarlet Letter wasn't too fun either.

I've tried reading it about five times now but I can never get past 100 pages in Love in the Time of Cholera.
Oh, and The House on Mango Street. Let's take The Grapes of Wrath and Their Eyes Were Watching God and roll it into one big pile of ****.

For the most part. We read some short stories that I didn't like at all, but would take too long to list/remember. I did, however, enjoy Beowulf quite a bit when we read it, as well as Animal Farm and Lord Of The Flies.

I found the book to be very dull and over-rated when it came time for us to read it. I was just bored with the book from start to finish, nothing really caught me/captivated me to appreciate and like the book. With that said though, I do believe that Atticus Finch is one of the best literary characters I've ever read.
