Hard to find decent headphone prices up here. But you made a good choice.
SR80's are also raved about online:

Would like a pair of 280's but stuck with these, but for $25 CAD I'm not complaining:

I found a good deal on Ebay. They were actually $100 but I had to pay $40 for shipping.

Probably what I'm going to end up doing.
However lots of sites list the HD555's as discontinued? New models coming out?

Maybe. Glad I got mine when I did.
And honestly, I tend to like open cans a bit more. I was hell bent on going for closed, but I've tried both now, and I love open. My house is generally pretty quiet, and even if you have a little outside noise, it doesn't effect what you're listening to. There's just a little better clarity you get with opens.
That's me telling you to not get 280s.

Hmm but heard since they're 'sterile/neutral' it makes them very good for mixing.
But yeahh I want life in my music so probably going with open. You persuading bastard you.

It's fun to cover the outside of my HD-555's with my hands. You can hear the difference in sound.

Not a ton of sound. In a quiet room, yea, you'll notice it, but also in a quiet room, you don't need it up so loud.

That is probably because you have had them for so long, that is what you expect things to sound like.

HEADPHONES THEY ARE CALLED HEADPHONES GOD DAMNIT PEOPLE
555's are good, but they're not the end-all of headphones. SR60-80's are said to be more up front and center of the music which works out well for metal and rock music, same with MS-1's. SR60's are real easy to drive at 32ohms, but so are the 555's at 50hms. Given all that, everyone who has grados say they are less comfy to wear for longer periods of time then 555's.
I own a pair of 555's and they're nice headphones. I don't see the point in getting a pair to drive them with an ipod though, if that's gonna be your sole source.
