...i don't know how much this would cost, but a big screen would be cool.
like... http://www.neovisionrental.com

they could play the webcast footage on the screen, and have sponsor commercials play between games (which could help pay for the cost of the screen), and post the scoreboard... and do player interviews..... and highlights...

....it'd be really cool if used to it's potential.
...expensive, but really cool.

Anybody else think it'd be a good idea?

^ that would be awesome

play games as they are going on in the webcast, and in between play the commercials that a lot of the companies have made for tv already... could also be used as a scoreboard so spectators can follow the brackets and even show schedule of events. charge the companies and sponsors spots to fill the commercials and it'll pay for itself and give the event huge appeal.

...exactly.

the only problems would be the cost, and the screen getting hit by paintballs.

The PSP just had their phoenix event, and they had no awards ceremony.... and a terrible trade show.

....don't let that happen to the USPL.

...eventually I'll come up with a great idea. I just have to keep trying different ideas until i come up with an awesome one.

Reffing:

Make each referee easily identifiable, either by number, name, or otherwise.
Have complaint and complement forms that teams can fill out and turn in somewhere, so that if a ref consistently makes bad calls, he has to answer to somebody. Also, if a ref is consistently doing a good job... people can complement him, and he'll maybe get something extra for it.

Because, of course... reffing is something that people complain about every tournament.... and this never changes. But, if we implement some sort of system (like... a little less pay if you get 2 or more complaint forms, more pay if you get complement ones), it'll encourage refs to do better.... and make better calls.

Every tournament I see refs doing really stupid things.... and this isn't just in the afternoons, it's in the mornings too, when they aren't yet tired from doing anything.

*on the same note... making sure the refs are taken care of is also important. Cold beverages and snacks available to them at their fields would be a great way to keep them healthy and focused throughout the day.

The giant LED screen I mentioned earlier...

A good way to pay for it is to sell commercial time... from outside sources. The Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force... they'd pay big bucks to get commercials on a giant TV screen, to be viewed by thousands of their target demographic.

Local businesses, too... like maybe a restaurant that wants paintballers to eat there after the day's playing is over... they'd probably put up some money to have a commercial on there.

All you need is to have a great salesman that can pitch the idea to those potential advertisers, and tadaa!

You need to have the number of "complaints" to be more then two. If I were a good ref, and I made a good call, and they just lost themselves the game, I can guarentee I will recieve 7 complaint forms.

Financially incentivizing on a case/case is too risky dangerous. It needs to be if your doing a good job, they will move you up a division (more pay) bad job, = go down a division. (consistantly)

I like the idea about the complaint/complement forms, but more than 2 would be needed to show if they're doing good/bad and you also need to look at the reasons like: "called (insert penalty) for (insert stupid action) cost us the game, blah, blah, blah." does not always mean that the ref was doing bad

Okay, more than 2 would be needed.... but it was just an example of how it might work. Change 2 to 20, and maybe then it'd be a bit more accurate?

and it doesn't need to be more pay... it could be... I dunno.... the ref gets to choose what field he refs in the future?

I'd just like to see complain/complement forms...

And they can be as simple as:

Ref Complaint/Complement Form:

Ref ID Number (if known):___________
Ref Name (if known):_______________

Circle one:
Complaint_______________Complement

Reason:

And....yeah... I'm lame. More on the giant LED screens:

a couple quotes I got from a guy at www.neovisionrental.com ......

Two options:
16’ x 9’ 12mm for $7,832.00
(This is a stage based LED screen system that requires a 16’ x 8’ stable platform to place the LED screen on.)

14.67’ x 8.8’ 14mm for $9,867.00
(This is a flown LED screen that weighs approximately 5,000 lbs.)

*note* these prices are estimates from neovision for a weekend rental, 8am-5pm, saturday and sunday.

So, you sell 30-second advertisement spots to 10 companies at $250 each, airing their commercials 5 times a day.... and there's $2,000...
Then you sell spots to 10 more companies at $500 each, airing their commercials 10 times daily (about once an hour from 8am-5pm)...and there's $5,000....

...so there's a great way to make back $7,000 on a big screen.

...and this big screen can be hung right under the press box, facing the grandstand of your tournament... and can feature the webcast, so that the audience can see their view, and the view from the video cameras on-field.
Then the highlights and replays, of course... announcements, schedule changes, rankings & scores, etc...

I would personally love to see this happen... but its not up to me, obviously.

***********************

And for future field designs... could we possibly have user-submitted field designs among those being chosen? I'm pretty sure that we have some really creative people on the forums that can design something very playable and exciting.

The huge screen would rock. The only thing is that itd have to be out of view to the on-field players. They could use the images broadcased to cheat and see where the other team is at.

Put the screen in the center of the field with the screen facing the crowd if it's high enough up I don't think they'd be able to see it but that'd prolly cost a rediculous amount of money.

Music.

Music with some speakers for the grandstand to listen to between games. There's at least a 3-min break between the end of one game, and the start of another... so play a song.

It helps the atmosphere.
