Soap and water.
Theres a screw just in front of the trigger guard, take it out and the stock and brass with seperate. Grab a sheridan valve tool to remove the valve, once everythings out, scrub it down with soap, water and a squeegy.
Take some steel wool to all the rusted metal parts and lubricate everything up with (basically) any liquid lube.
Edit: And some WD40 to try to loosen everything up to you can dissassmble it will be fine, just clean it all off afterwards.

In the state it's in it's worth about $300 in todays market, if you get it cleaned up and working properly, that might reach $400.

Wow you are soooo lucky. Have fun with it. You'll love it. I would return the favor for him with a Christmas present or so.

Bah! You don't need that old thing. Are you sure you didn't find it laying beside a dumpster?
How about you let me have it? It'll just take up space, and I can use it for firewood.
