its a mag aluminum alloy most likely. and any material that can oxide can burn cause they're the same thing. its all about surface area to volume ratio, even seen steel burn? go get some extra fine steel wool and a 9v and see what happens.

except the alloy balance throws off that chemical combo quite a bit there

i would give SP a call, ask them exactly what alloy the body is. Once you know that (if they will tell you,) you will be able to get a much better picture of what you will be able to do.

Check to see that you can coat or plate the metal before you grind it. I don't know much about magnesium but I do know that it can oxidize in seconds (first time Ive ever used something I learned in chem lab outside of class)

Wait...isnt thermite aluminum+iron oxide+ heat=thermite?

I doubt spart parts would make it out of magnesium...

And hand sanding does take a long time. I did that with my VS2.

But i can tell you, its totally worth it.

Heres my body after halfbacking and polishing.

you should polish that spyder internally since all the new spyders have horrible tolerances inside, its like sandpaper in there.

and its magnesium and iron oxide (rust) power.

Thermite does not create magnesium. Magnesium is one of the few materials that burns hot enough to ignite thermite. That is all. Please read the anarchists cookbook.

ops my b I forgot. you make the thermite then you use a propane torch to light the mag to light the thermite and then you take the money out of the safe.

Ok I just got off the phone with the smart parts machine tech and he said that there is such a small amount of magnesium in the body and it is mostly aluminium. So he said there should be no issues with grinding but a mask should be worn to prevent breathing in the aluminium dust. Thanks for all the comments. I will be taking pictures through out the process and will post when Im done before I send it for anno.

Umm...im pretty sure you guys need to stop talking about thermite.

You don't need some super hot substance to light it...

I used a slow burning firework fuse, a match, and a disposable lighter...

I made a small batch in a coffee can and set if of at a construction sight (long time ago when my neighborhood was still being built)

and in addition to the mask make sure you use a grinding wheel for aluminum. normal grinding wheels get ruined by aluminum.

Ok so I got the epiphany in the mail today. The guy I got it from said he couldnt get it to work which is fine considering what I paid. What makes it even better is I took it apart and there was paint and shell all over the inside of the gun. So I cleaned it out and relubed and put it back together, tossed in a new battery, aired it up and VOILA it works. So thats a bonus now I dont need to buy parts for it right away. I will be starting the work on it over the next few days and will take pictures through out the process and post them up before I have it annoed then new pics when I get it back. Any colour suggestions?
