2008 Round Up
Well what a year we have had.We have gone from ending events in 12th and 14th to getting two 1st place finishes putting us in 5th place in the CPL at the end of the season. The season started of at the best event of the Millennium..... Malaga Beach. A lot was riding on the team to do well at this event. Nexus had its best year ever in 07, finishing 3rd in the series. No wins but a consistent season that proved we were on the right track. With a new line up with some of the best players in europe we were sure that 2008 was going to be even better.Over confidence and a lack of discipline meant that nothing worked and we bombed BIG time with only one win in the prelims. 12th over all and back to the drawing board.
We had put a lot of hard hours in leading up to this event to try and get back to where we should be. Just to play on Sunday was our goal and we knew it was going to be tough. our first match was against London Shock who were out to teach us a lesson at our home event. Again the team didn't click and we lost to Shock and to the Ducks 5-4 after being 4-0 up. We ending up losing all 3 match's ended up 14th.The team was going though hell. We had the talent and the support but just couldn't pull it all together. The team was not working and the team was now under a lot of pressure and some harsh decisions had to be made if we were going to put things right.
We went in to this event on a high we had changed a few things in training and the mood within the Camp was good.... and boy did they work! With no team scoring any more then 2 points against us the whole event, we went on to beat the Phillys 5-2 to win the Millennium World Cup. Nexus was the first UK team to get a win in Pro since Shockwave in 2000 [I think] and the team was just starting to click and show it's true potential. It was also Nexus first Pro win in any league, Millennium or NPPL and we had beaten one of the top 3 teams in the world to get it. When we returned and had recovered from our hangovers we decided that we needed to reduce the size of the squad in order to maintain what we had. We made the decision cut two players and one more decided to leave. This left us with a squad of 8 for the remainder of the season.
Germany was a good event. We played well in the prelims but met Joy in the quarter finals. Joy are a great team and they did exactly what they needed to do to beat us in that match. Overall, we finished 7th and although there were people saying that Toulouse was "luck" we knew different. We were out played by Joy and we knew it but we also knew that we could beat them and the mood was good.
Nexus went into this event to show everyone that we were a winning team and that Toulouse was not a one off. Everyone played great and although some people were playing with injuries and problems, it all came together to produce another win. Again we played Phillys in the final after beating Joy in the semis. WE beat them 5-1 in a match that showed everyone that we were good and that we deserved to win. Our second win of the season and the only team to win 2 events in 2008It was an emotional season but everyone pulled thorough and kept believing. We never gave up, never and that is something the team has always had. You play till you cannot play any more. You run until you cannot run anymore and if you have to you do run some more! It was a hell of a year. A year that was filled with tears both of disappointment and of joy and a year to build on for the future.
THANKS TO ALL OUR SPONSORS for standing by us though the highs and lows.
