I think I am going to go out for track this year, i ran a 4.83 in the 40 about 3 months ago with absolutely no training beforehand so I think I have a good shot at winning in the 100 or 200 yard dash. What kind of training should I do to get faster in short distances? just do sprints? I workout my legs a good amount which I know helped me gain speed/power.

So its offseason before track and I'm doing some light weight lifting. Mostly a ****load of crunches with weights on my chest and push ups and chin ups. As far as actual weight training goes what kind of exercies would benefit me? I run distance track like the 800 and mile. Today after I worked out I ran a 2 29 800 after not running for over a week.

Ok IDK about running, but do you really need to run that long of a distance to train for a 100?

Well, It seems I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I just finished my third marathon today (Philly). Some info on myself:
Age 32
1 mile - 5:50
5K - 19:47
1/2 marathon = 1:35
marathon = 3:46
I have yet to run a good marathon. My best time was my first (run 2 years ago). The next I went into it injured and today I found out that I need ALOT MORE electrolites than a shot of Gatoraid every 2 miles. Both my legs cramped up realy bad at mile 21 and I limped the last 5 miles.
Oh, I also have asthma, but for some reason my 5K times are the best of all my races. Eventualy I want to qualify for Boston but first I have to learn how to properly race a marathon (I'll definatatly be runnign with my own fuel belt from now on).
I also want to try ultra running (50 miles+). When I train at a slow pace I can easily hit 30 miles without a problem and ultra running is not at all about speed, in fact, 9 hrs for a 50 miler is considered excelent. My knees are fine and most ultra runners I've know have suffered knee injuries doing things *other* than running (like a pickup game of basketball, or playing soccer, or twisting it while taking out the trash).
It is proven that long distance running, when the mileage is built up gradualy and not mixed with much speed work, is actualy healthy for your joints.

You're definitely more distance oriented. Some of those times are pretty legit. Why don't you run the 10k?
Also out of curiosity what colleges did you run at?

Anyone have any suggestions for a good pair of running shoes? They're gonna be used mostly for track practice if that matters.
Thanks.

So I'm a pretty bad underpronator. The outside of my feet usually hurt the worst after a run.
I'm thinking about cutting up a sock and putting a couple strips on the outside of my foot inside the shoe. Try and even up my strike and give the outside of my foot a little cushioning.
Is this like a horrid idea? Or not bad?

Well I'd say a pair of Brooks. They're really the only major specialty running shoe company and I've been able to wear and run in several of their models.
I'd suggest the Brooks Adrenaline's they're a support/stability shoe which can't really hurt you even if you're a neutral runner.

New shoes, you need a light weight, flexible shoe. If not you can always go the route of inserts but I'd stay away from them as much as possible. Check out the Brooks Ghosts.

I have a pair of Asics Gel-Landreths. They have been reasonably good. I just wish there was some way to train my foot to land more neutral. I think I'd be a lot better runner if I could.

My coach has the most messed up foot strikes I've ever witnessed and he is relatively fast 14:51 5k, 24:38 8k, 69:12 half
You could always go to a foot specialist and get inserts made for your feet. If you wear flip flops don't.
