Well I'd say a pair of Brooks. They're really the only major specialty running shoe company and I've been able to wear and run in several of their models.
I'd suggest the Brooks Adrenaline's they're a support/stability shoe which can't really hurt you even if you're a neutral runner.

I'm thinking about cutting up a sock and putting a couple strips on the outside of my foot inside the shoe. Try and even up my strike and give the outside of my foot a little cushioning.

New shoes, you need a light weight, flexible shoe. If not you can always go the route of inserts but I'd stay away from them as much as possible. Check out the Brooks Ghosts.
