well there are too many rumors and too much confusion about aurora so I thought I would try and compile all of it into one thread.
first a little history:
back in the 90's planet eclipse was a custom shop, they modified other companies guns and sold them as private labels. around the turn of the century they were looking at a number of custom finishes to bring a bit more flash to their guns and came across aurora. the problem with aurora is the it requires almost perfect prep and if not done just right it will either not 'stick' or it will flake off in certain areas. PE realised that this is not the type of application that would be able to be mass produced but when the prototypes came back to the shop the staff loved them so they decided to make a limited run of them for the staff.... that give us the eclipse cockers
after a very warm reception at fields and online PE decided to come out with a very limited run of the popular guns of the day. there are more then ten guns of each, they had been rumored to be only ten of each, but they are in europe
after that things calmed down and PE started designing their own marker, the ego. during this time the auroras started to gain legend and rumors of how they were made started being circulated. the difference between these guns and custom anno jobs is that any good custom shop can replicate limited run annos from the factory and there is no way to tell the difference. aurora is different, it requires a lot of equipment that only large industrial coating shops use which means only only a few people in the world even have the capability and most dont even know paintball exists. rumors flew about 90% of the parts being destroyed in the process and the process needing 100,000 volts, none of which were true but it fueled speculation and drove the price of the existing auroras to the sky. PE took note of this and decided to do a small promo run for the nexus private label at the NPPL huntington beach event. there was such level of interest that thy decided to sell one and looked at doing another limited run, ultimately they decided that it was too difficult to do with the new ego7 so they decided to make a run of parts kits and accents on their sl74 model.
around the time when the nexus came out I had been reading about the increased demand and recognized something about the finish and decided to see if i could figure out what it was all about. after months of research and trial and error I was able to get it to work. what I started with was this:
I came up with was this:

(quick update, this gun has been stolen by Ana who is a user on Pbn)
this was the first one I did and the only one out there ever made witha dust finish. I posted it on here and got a lot of responses from people wanting to buy it to people accusing me of stealing it from a planet eclipse warehouse in england

one person who did get ahold of me was Lorne from ODD paintball, he inquired about partnering up and doing a run of them for his customers (they had been asking him to do aurora since he started). we decided to do a test run of four newer high end guns and bring them to the world cup to gauge interest, this is what we came up with a mini, ego7, dm7, and closer
I met a number of industry people:
and took a pic fo the new dye oil slick to compare:
now there are a lot of questions about aurora and I want to set the record straight:
oil slick and aurora are not the same
aurora doesnt require a ton of voltage to make
aurora doesnt have a failure rate of 90%
aurora is harder then anodizing by a long shot but due to the nature of it it can peel if its not applied correctly (the reason its rare, its hard to apply correctly)
aurora is very expensive because its hard to do and very few people can do it, thats how the market works
there are very few aurora guns floating around and I want to make a list of all the aurora guns in order to when they were made.
