I haven't run in over a week. Ugh.

Question:
I recently started getting really bad aches in my upper shins. I figured it was shin splints or something so I stopped running for about a week entirely. My shins feel fine now but should I wait a little longer before running so they can heal entirely or am I good to go?

Most runners will encounter into shin splints at some point in their careers. Just ice them, get better arch supports for your running shoes, take some anti-inflammatory pain killers, and run on grass instead of pavement to reduce impact.

Good luck!

to the OP:

I didn't read through all the pages, but:

have you not run the mile since like high school. I only ask cause your mile time is 4:39, yet your 5000 pr is 14:53. That doesn't add up too well. 14:53 is about, what, 4:44 mile pace.

I've run 4:13 for the mile, and my 5000 pr is only 15:00 (though I've only run it once on a track)

until my senior year my mile pace was slower then that of my 2 mile
ive run 4:30 a couple times in practise but i was only posting race times.
in HS i was a distance only guy who only ran a few races in the 2 mile. towards the end of my senior year i started focusing on making the NON 5k standard. i ended up making it but a personal problem forbid my attendance. same with my schlorship acceptance. then i got injured

many of my competitors were around the mid to low teen's as you are and always laughed when i was put in the second heat of the mile only to get top 3 in the 2

I felt pretty good after running my mile just under 7 minutes. I just run a couple times a week just so I don't sit around being lazy.

Being the fat kid all my life, i was never a good runner. I cant don't remember ever being able to constantly run a mile, like ever, i normally had to stop and walk.. Recently (since sunday lol) i have been exercising and getting into shape, and i had been using the elliptical instead of normal running. Today i decided to actually run and i hopped on the treadmill, i went for 20 mins (could of gone longer, but i don't want to over do it) and managed 1.97 miles. On the elliptical it was telling me i was doing 2.0-2.15 miles over a 20 min time period but i didn't know if i could trust it.

So tell me, is that a decent time for some one just starting?

edit: ok, well my plan is to join the marines, and befor i join i want to be able to handle anything they can throw at me in BT. im 6'2 245lbs, i use to weigh 315 about 3 years ago. I work a real labor intensive and physically demanding job, so over the 3 years i have lost 70lbs and haven't really changed my eating habit. For the 3 past years, i have smoked daily for about 2.5 years of it, and for the past year a pack a day. I quit cold turkey like 10 days ago. I had never played sports or done anything in the gym that was challenging. Hell i never ran a full mile with out stopping before today. My concern is my knee's, they arent very good. i mean hell sometimes they just hurt when im at work, so if im running for along time, its going to kinda rought on my knee's.

Also do you guys have any advice? how should i start out, is there a plan or routine you would suggest, or just run until you cant? idk, i was just going to do 20 mins, and how ever fare i see how fare i can run. i was going to do that for a week, then bump it up 5 mins, i was also planning on doing this 5/6 days a week.

sure. everyone has to start somewhere. just ease into it and you'll get better. not everyone can start out running as fast as others. as long as you have a consistent training schedule you will gradually improve.

Yeah, I've just started running to try to stay in shape somewhat. I run around three miles a day, and today I ran a 5k in a little over 27 minutes. I know that's not great and people on here can do it in 10 minutes less, but figuring I've never really run xc or anything I thought it was pretty decent. I'm just going to try and maintain a consistent routine.

If your knees are bad, running is not for you. Maybe laps in a pool would be better.

If you want to lose fat, weight lifting will help tremendously. You will lose more than if you just ran.

maybe its the hour at which im writing this or maybe its that my thoughts are elsewhere but how exactly does weightlifting beat running in terms of weight loss?

I think hes saying in addition to running, as in you will lose more fat if you supplement your running with weight lifting or vice versa. Which is kind of stating the obvious, but still. I will say that weight lifting is probably better for changing your overall body composition in the long run.

ok, i reread it and got the gist of it better. and ill agree that weights are needed to have a postivite body compostition.

I run about 3 miles every other day, on Wednesday I throw in some stadiums for 20 minutes which kicks my ***. All of the track/cross country kids laugh at us while me and my buddy run after class.

its likly because you labor while you doing it cause youve never been taught form so you make it harder. try doing buttkicks, high knees and glancing the ball of your foot off the ground thendo these combined in a rather jerky fashion. itll help your form which will make running easier

Alright, I have a question regarding running on treadmills. Is it easier or harder to run on treadmills?

I've been running just to get into shape somewhat, and I ran 5k in a little over 25 minutes. I know it's that great, but honestly, I don't think I could have done it just out running on my own. I like running on treadmills because I run after classes, so I don't really want to run around old Louisville at night, and I like being able to keep constant speed easier. But I was just wondering if it's common that treadmills are easier to run on or not. How does it affect distance and time?
