Beer Gut

My beer gut is starting to form. How do I get rid of it while continuing my beer drinking habit?

You aren't getting the gut from drinking beer. You're getting it from eating hot wings and chips while you are drinking the beer.

No, not at all.

Well, the obvious is to quit, or at least cut down on, drinking beer...

I would recommend you start a simple TBT (total body training) program. Something along the lines of the following:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday:
Deadlifts: 3 sets of 10 reps
Military Press: 3 sets of 10 reps
Squats: 3 sets of 10 reps
Rows: 3 sets of 10 reps
Bench: 3 sets of 10 reps

This hits all the basics, if you want, you could add in some curls, triceps work, etc. Keep your rest between sets to no more than 2 minutes, aim for closer to 1 minute. This will keep your heart rate up and keep you burning calories.

On any of your "off" days (Tues/Thur/Sat/Sun) I would recommend intervals if you can manage, or at least some regular steady-state cardio. Jump on a stationary bike, elliptical, or rower; I would not recommend a treadmill or a track unless you are using them to do sprints. By intervals I mean you should be doing periods of max effort work, followed by longer periods of rest (not sitting on your ***, but working at a slower/easier pace), maybe along the lines of 15 seconds of work and 45 seconds of "rest."

The biggest part of this whole thing is diet. As I said before, and as you are well aware, the mass amounts of beer you are consuming are not helping you physically. Cut out the chips/candy/fast food/etc. Start getting more protein in your diet, cleaner carbs like plain oats, whole wheat/whole grain pasta/bread, etc. Also, your fat should be coming from healthy sources like olive oil, nuts, etc.

hit the nail on the head.
i used to have a big gut. (partied all the time, ate fast food for lunch EVERYDAY, snacked all the time.)
at the time i did work out, so i didn't have boobies or anything. just a gut.
diet like there's no tomorrow, and do exercises that work major muscle groups. like legs, chest, and back.
working major muscle groups helps get rid of fat from other parts of your body.
and stop drinking. i used to get 2 beers on the way home from work everyday. now i only drink on saturday. and even then it's only 2 beers, tops. when i'm chilling with friends

Listen to what travis said. Eat less bull****, get more exercise. It's not complicated, just hard work.

try a salad

but seriously...beer is pretty much water and carbs there for making a person bloated, then in addition to eating like **** the "beer gut" forms.

run three times a week, sit ups arnt going to burn fat.

a healthy diet is a must as well...sooo maybe switch to liquor?

sacrifices do have to be made in order to achieve what you want.

other than the level of impact on your joints, what's the difference between an eliptical and a treadmill?

you don't have to answer that, I just googled and it said there is no difference.

I plan on jogging 5 days, and lifting 3 times a week. I'm hoping with that I can at least cut my gut down some, and develop some sorely needed upper body strength.

swimming is such a great work out. especially for belly fat.
take it easy and swim around 1000 meters every other day. then go to everyday.

Liquor has 100 calories a shot, or the same as one can of light beer.

I wonder if it has the same effect on your weight though, since all the calories in liquor are from alcohol and some of the calories in beer are from carbs. Can your body even metabolize alcohol into energy (later stored as fat)?

i read an article in my Men's Health magazine about how liquor and beer are the worst calories to put in your body. they are "liquid" calories which your body can't metabolize as fast as food ones.

i'll try to hunt it down, then i'll edit this post when i can

Your body is also forced to metabolize them before any other source, such as protein, "clean" carbs, and healthy fats.

Yes your body metabolizes alcohol, but it costs more calories to metabolize than it yields. However because it's a poison your body just stores everything else in your system until the alcohol is gone. So if you drink and get the drunk munchies in addition to a calorie surplus you're going to get the infamous "beer gut"

If that were true, drinking would make you lose weight. Just do a google search, one gram of ethanol contains 7 calories, compared to 4 calories per gram of protein or carbohydrate, and 9 calories per gram of fat.
