The best way to work your core is not flexion and extension like all the infomercial are trying to get you to believe. Leg raises and situps are fine, but they are far from the ideal way to train the core. The way your core is designed is to stablize your torso and keep it from bending so you don't snap your spinal cord. You should train it the same way. Do things that involved the least amount of bending and twisting, but instead involve you resisting a force from a single direction at a time.
