So I decided to go with the A4 over the Acura.
A recap:
The A4 is an original owner car, smoke-free, nearly perfect exterior and interior, 150k miles and a 5 speed -- something I am a big fan of having now that I'm out in the mountains and not commuting an hour a day in bumper to bumper traffic. Private party is asking $6000 for it.
I've spoken to the gentleman selling this and he seems legitimate, says that all 150k miles are highway from his wife commuting to Winston Salem 50 miles each way for work. Pumps and belts were replaced at 94k, and he has all maintenance receipts. Here's more from his autotrader page:
Quote:
|
Audi A4 1.8 Turbo. Original owner. Looks and runs great, dealer maintained with receipts. All highway miles. Great gas mileage. On board computer with climate control. Mobil 1 synthetic oil and filter for life of car. Garage kept, no accidents, clear title. Non-smoker, very clean interior. All weather mats. Keyless entry with alarm. Good tires, good brakes. Maintenance book. OBO
|
Now - with all this in mind - what do I need to be looking for when I go for a test drive in this thing? From what I understand the major stuff (the belts and pump) have been replaced and should be good for at least another 25k. Should I be worried about the clutch, which hasn't been replaced yet, even though almost all 150k were highway miles? He says he's never had issues with the electrical systems at all, which I know Audis are notorious for, so what should I expect to go first? This is also the first car with a turbo I will have ever driven - what should I expect? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'll be taking it for a spin sometime this weekend when work permits.

That alot of miles for an Audi, but I'm sure you already know that.
Theres a few guys who can probably help you out here. But you might want to check an Audi forum just to be sure.

not if its been maintained with all receipts. Then it isnt TOO high of mileage.
I would take it to a local shop that deals with vw/audi if possible. Being that this is your first car of the type.

Definitely take it to a shop, I'll never buy a car without doing that again.

The S4 turbos are, i dont think they use the same ones? (not sure)
I believe the Audi 1.8t uses a K04 turbo? I dont think those are really known for crapping out. But after 150k you never know.

This car with 150k miles has a KBB of about $6300, how is that way too high of a price?

I thought they used a k03 and the k04 was the usual upgrade when the k03 goes? And if it hasnt been replaced or rebuilt by 150k its going to need to be fairly soon.

Is that a sexual innuendo or are you actually making a suggestion? I don't have the foggiest idea what that means, in all honesty

If he will let you take the intake hose off the turbo when its cold and physically grasp the shaft in the turbo hole and check for play back and forth and up and down, if it doesn't move in any way but spins freely then its good. Make sure its spins good.
Right? lol someone make sure im correct.

Im pretty sure the 1.8t's came with either the k03 or the k03s. The S4 came with the k04 I think and its a popular upgrade?
