If you need any more horsepower, I could always ferret out the Radio Shack Color Computer 3 out of the closet. It still has the 340 baud plug-in modem to keep the site speed up. Old-school FTW!

Good to hear, but If you ever decide to change we are nearly 1/2 the price of SoftLayer and we may even be able to do a little better for you guys.

Looking forward to the improvements

Wow, that hardware seems like overkill for a forum.

Donate some to me?

During this maintenance window we will be migrating to a new master database server which should hopefully increase reliability of the site, and speed up site performance a bit.

The maintenance may not last for the entire window, but it will take several hours to dump our database, move the data to the new machine, and reimport the data on the new server. During this period of time the site will be unavailable.

For those that are curious, here's the specs of our new hardware:
  • SuperMicro X7QC3 Mainboard
  • 4 x Intel Xeon 7320 Quadcore 2.13GHz CPUs
  • 16 x 1GB Hynix ECC DDR2 FB-DIMM
  • 3 x Seagate Cheetah 300GB SCSI 15k RPM HDD
  • Adaptec 3405 RAID Card

As much as we hate downtime, this migration was unavoidable, and will hopefully resolve some long standing issues for us.

The team at PbNation thanks you for your understanding and hopes you enjoy the new iron!
Don't you think since the forum will only grow larger, raiding some TB drives would have been better?

on the ram. good choice.

on the CPU, no one else can really match Intel as of right now for the price.

Do you guys do the work hands on, or does your data center do it for you?

Pics of data center / PBN servers would be awesome.

Guys, the server market is entirely different than the stuff you guys are used to playing with in your desktop rigs. Short of the Xeon 7400s that came out *yesterday* this server is top of the line. We plan out all of these upgrades carefully, if I thought I'd need more disk space in the next couple of years, I'd have gotten it..

soo... i think the real question is: how many frames per second do you get on UT3???

i upgraded from an AMD 3800 to an intel 3.0 dual core a month or so ago, and i'm actually pretty happy with the performance.

You and me both. Our servers are colocated in Dallas, TX, and I live in Pennsylvania. I've never been to the datacenter, all the work I do is remote

This is what you should do.

Pick up phone, dial datacenter.

"Hey, this is Kyle from PBNation, due to over whelming demand by our members, we would like to get some pictures of the data center our servers are in."

"Ok sir, we would love to do that for you!"

Or something or other...

Indy.... that... is so wrong... on so many accounts.... it makes me want to punt a baby.

There's some pics of the datacenter we're in. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all

It looks like you may want to replace the cooling fans before putting them on eBay.
