Cut it up

So I just got a 16" Deadlywind barrel in a trade and it being CF and all, I was wondering if I would be able to saw off and inch or 2. What would happen if I did? Sorry if this has already been discussed and thanks for your input

Kind of curious about that myself. I just got a stiffi tip for an ul back and instead of it ending up as a 14 inch like it's suppose to, it's actually almost an inch and a half longer then a 14 inch ul.

it is not recommended, CF is woven together from many different strands, cutting it will break the resin that holds the strands together and will cause major problems, not to mention you would need something close to a diamond saw to ensure a clean cut

There you go

Problems include- unweaving of rest of barrel, sharp edges from cut could possibly break balls(both yours and the paintballs)

take a look at this thread i posted about a week ago: http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=2779045

you dont have to use a diamond tip/ edge blade to cut carbon fiber, and it will not unravel once cut (resin is cured through out the carbon weave, not just the outer layer)................
................................here we go again with more arguments to come

yeah i knew the porting would give it away
just use a high speed cutting disc on a dremel or foredom. use some sort of tape to make your cutting mark and cut through it. take your time, and use water or a cutting fluid to help keep the temp down when cutting. you may need to use some fine grit sand paper (600grit or so) to finish the deal

impressive, but it doesnt really matter how it looks on a macro level, its what it looks like on the micro level that counts, just because we cannot see any frayed fibers with the naked eye does not mean they are not there

oh with the naked eye. So whos to say that they dont come frayed from the manufacture, considering you wouldnt be able to tell with the naked eye. Be cautious with your aluminum barrels, aluminum is very porous, and those holes may turn into cracks

Ive looked at Stiffi and Sly barrels at the micro level, they do not come frayed from the manufacturer which is why they do not shred paint

lol, how does anything I say even imply that I am 12 years old, I have backed up my position with facts and first hand experience, you have reverted to petty name calling

There is a wax-coated bit that re-seals it as you cut, that has been recommended several times. Remember to take your time, be careful, and wear a breathing mask, you dont want CF dust in your lungs.
Its not a great idea though, I think they will actually cut it for you.

Don't really get your point here with this and your other posts. Are you actually trying to claim you can't cut carbon fiber?! Dude do you think they make the barrels to size? They make a long tube and cut it to size.

FYI his cut is cleaner then the end of my stiffi mamba tip that has yet to even see a day of play.

actually very few CF products are cut from one long rod, instead they weave the fibers of each rod together separately because it reduces the need to make clean cuts, they simply have to weave the ends back into the barrel and seal everything with resin.

I am not claiming in anyway that you cannot cut carbon fiber, I am merely skeptical that his cut is as clean as he thinks. I would love his work to be excellent but working in a machine shop I have seen many people cut many things, CF included, and think it is a good clean cut only to have it fail on a micro level.
