I've got an out of print paperback that is actually a collected series of short stories from various authors all utilizing the automobile as a backdrop for commentary on modern civilization entitled Car Sinister. Its a great read if you can ever find it on one of those old book trader shelves.

And I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig.
