From your friends in the OK D-Day German Army:

http://www.ddayadventurepark.com/ind...sk=view&id=119

The best map of the overall field is toward the bottom of the linked page. Click on it for a closer view. There is a tremendous difference in terrain, both in elevation and character. Utah beach at the north of the field is largely bare with Germans dug in uphill against larger numbers of Allies. As you move farther south, the woods become thicker. The terrain is most challenging in the area called "the 210"-210 acres of wooded hills, some streams, deer trails, and other fun stuff. Great terrain for maneuver, ambushes, etc.

If you have any questions about D-Day, LMK and I will do my best to answer your questions.

MAPS vs Aerial Photos

Maps vs Aerial Photos, both serve to give you
a better understanding of why this site is so
difficult. Changes of 100 feet over a short
distance occur at several locations. Steep,
brush and leaf covered rocky slopes make
knee and elbow pads a MUST have, especially
for anyone who seeks to go Airborne, Ranger,
Pathfinder for the Allied Command.

Here are some recent Low Level Photos of a
number of the key locations of the field, courtesy
of the Allied Command.

210 Area looking back towards main part of
field and beyond that the camping/vendor area.

Sat Image showing entire property, including newly
added 30 acrea area NW of UTAH Beach with key
locations noted.

View from UTAH Beach looking South towards Causeway,
Ste mere Eglise and German Airfield. Note road entering
woodline is road which leads to Ste mere Eglise, road to
right leads to Causeway. Woods to right of blue/red bus
slope upwards, whereas woods to right of bus slope downward
to valley floor where Ste mere Eglise is situated.

Closeup look at German held portion of UTAH Beach. NEW
German two story tower (not shown) is situated slightly behind
as well as at a higher elevation than two main concrete gun
emplacements.

Western edge of 210 Area looking east towards main portion
of field. Note steep valleys as well as uphill terrain which leads
from pond in foreground up towards 'indian lands,' then to Caen
and finally camping area off in the in distance.

Sincerely,

In addition to the maps, photos & such you might try to arrive a few days early and actually walk the field. Maps and the like are great tools but there is nothing like humping the hills and valleys of DD when it's 100+ degrees.....

That's one of the many advantages of playing in the mini-scenarios leading up to the Big Game.

I can see where participating in one of the mini games could be beneficial. Personally tho I always chose not to for a few reasons:
~ By walking the field rather than participating in a game I could visit any area of the field and spend whatever time I felt necessary to gather information.
~ While walking the field I was also able to discuss 'issues' with other leaders that I might not normally see during key times of the actual game. Something like this might be a little tough (and counter-productive) to do while playing in one of the mini games.
~ Another aspect that I needed to consider is that eventho I can still stay out on the field during the entire event and throw paint with players 1/2 my age I highly doubt I could do it 3-4 days in a row and not pay for it..... *lol*
It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it worked quit well for me year after year, just my 2 cents

As the kids say, QFT! I am in the same boat. However, I will add add the mini-scenario format has been revamped a bit for this year so there is only one game per day and none of Friday to allow old geezers like me time to rest and recover.

Another advantage of the mini's for commanders is that they give you a chance to see how key areas of the field play out. For instance, Caen is played during the first mini, etc.

What it really comes down to is how much paint you can afford? To play in all four mini's plus the main game equals alot of paint. Many players will select the mini(s) that focus on their area of the field plus the main game.

If you show up there with cash in your pocket you will not be turned away. However if you go to the offical site and get on their b/s/t forum you can probably pick-up a registration for cheap from someone that can't attend....
