Good news and bad news

Bad news:

Michelle didn't pass her class so she cannot continue the nursing program for this year. You guys have no idea how royally pissed off I am. She ****ing missed it by two points. Two points!!! Now all the plans that I/we had are put back a year. The only good thing that might come out of this bad situation is that I may be able to go back to school for a semester or two and get some of my classes out of the way. But that might be pushing it.

Good news:

This one's primarily for Sean unless anyone else knows what the hell I'm talking about.

I bought completely new electronics yesterday for my guitar. And no, I didn't go with the EMG's. I listened to sound files online and compared the tones between all models of EMG to some seymour duncan livewires and for the sound and variety of music I'm playing right now, I decided to go with a Seymour Duncan Dave Mustaine signature livewire pickup set. It's an active pickup and I'll be operating them on 18V as opposed to the standard 9V. The only downside to this choice (or so I thought until last night) was that it doesn't come with decent control knobs. So i had to get some quality ones from a different supplier. But it worked out well because somehow, and for some reason, the place I ordered the pups from knocked an extra $15.00 off the price which is what the control knobs cost me so it evened out nicely.

I love EMG's myself but right now, and for awhile probably, I play a wide range of stuff and I wanted a pickup that would suit that well. EMG's IMO sound a bit sterile when playing anything except for metal and leads. Mainly because it doesn't have much as far as mids go, unless you go with the EMG 60, but I'm not a fan of that tone. When I get a 7 string it'll get some EMG 707's which is basically a 7-string version of the EMG 85.

If you want my opinion with your guitar; don't put new pickups in it. At this point in time it's not worth it. Actually, it's never worth it. Take that $250 and save it to get yourself a nice little TUBE combo amp. Any upgraded pickup will sound like crap through a solidstate amp so don't even think about solid. Although, if you do get a solid state, get one with built in effects and you won't ahve any need for a new guitar or new pickups. Amps always come first if your truly after sound quality. If you just want to say you have a Zack-Wylde set then by all means get it. But after the amp, the next thing you should get is a better guitar. Not to say that the one you've got isn't good, but for putting new pickups in it, it's not worth it. The body on yours is made of agathis. I call Agathis the plywood of guitar woods. It sucks, it's soft (which is bad) and does crap for sound. What a lot of people don't realize is that the wood of a guitar actually lends A LOT of tonal characteristics to the guitar. Some would debate that it does more for the tone than a pickup. that's why guitars like the plexiglass and ceramicasters don't sound as good. With that being said, Mahogany is the best choice for a metal type sound. You don't have the spend a crap load to get a mahogany bodied guitar either. i see them all day long on craigslist go for around $150-$250. Actaully, there's a BC rich Warlock on there for $150 right now. I don't know what wood it's made of though, but i know you like that general shape.

Just offering my .02 here.
