Try for Sponsorship?

Ok, I'm a co-captain (or at least one with strong input) on my team (Riot) and I've been questioning whether I should try to apply the team to some sponsorships and see If we can get any interest.

We have a roster of 10 people and we've done well in past local tournaments which include:

(In order of when we did the tourneys)
2nd 3-man Warpaint Tournament
3rd 3-man Warpaint Tournament
2nd 3-man Warpaint Tournament
1st in Action Acres 3-man Tourney (Latest)

and also a few of our guys were apart of the Forest Demon team that got 3nd in the SPPL Oklahoma finals.

Also we have one great sponsor already, Warpaint, who has supported us all the way.

-------------

Now here's my question, if you're on or have been on a sponsored team, what's the kind of criteria they're looking at teams to sponsor, how did you ask and just what are some general tips in getting it.

I'm fairly confident that if we present our team the right way, we can get interest from companies that would be willing to have their name associated with ours which will hopefully help us to go further and take the next step to go to more major tournaments.

Thanks for you help and comments,

Mikey (Team Riot)

well when we look at sponsorships, we look at a team that will actively go and represent us by bringing in new customers, making out name well known, winning, and being all around good guys.
Remember that sponsorship is not a free handout, its a business transaction between two companies. The second company being your team.

if you generate business for us we help you. The more successfull we are the more help you get.

Okay First the Team Resume

The team resume should contain a detailed history of your teams:

(Dye’s Requirements)

1) Team name, home location and captain information.
2) Teams general history.
3) Names, ages and playing years of each team member.
4) Color printed photographs of each team member. (Can be scanned and printed)
5) Teams practice schedule and home playing location.
6) Future tournament event schedule.
7) Current head to toe equipment list of each team member.
8) Teams past tournament achievements.
9) Teams current sponsors.
10) Team goals for the future.
That way when companies look at it they see what the team has accomplished, and plans to do over the season. They can also see the player’s profiles and what gear everyone uses.

Companies want to represent the best teams paintball has to offer so Companies look for teams that;

A. bring a winning and marketable team to the table
B. A team that has won several tournaments
C. A team that is self sufficient
D. A team that has been together for a while and has done well
E. A team that plays NATIONAL EVENTS!

Sponsors you should look for:

Local companies and Fields: They are going to be the most helpful people you can talk to, they want people to support their field and bring more players in. you should ask them what you can do for them to help out, don’t mention working out a deal or anything until your team has put in a decent amount of work and helped out around the shop a lot. They will in turn be more willing to help your team out if you come to them with an arrangement to help out in turn for either free field time or a case of paint or just better pricing, not necessarily wholesale either.

Major Companies: put together a resume of your team that highlights the above description, then MAIL it in, not email because companies tend to only read things that are in hard copy, because they get thousands of sponsorship requests every day via email.

What sponsors do:

Sponsors can do anything from give you nothing to giving you a full ride in the sport. For most teams right now they are on the end that has nothing done for them. Why? Because they have done nothing to earn a good sponsorship. Companies look for teams that have a good market value, that means can your team represent the company in the area you are located? If you play at Dynasty’s home field, don’t look for a Smart Parts sponsorship because they already have a good team in the area. Companies also look for teams, who can go to national events regularly, because there the team has an ability to market the company to everyone there and the other teams.

What you do for sponsors:

Your team has a responsibility to represent sponsors in the most professional way possible, this includes following all of the sponsors rules and regulations, wearing or using their gear at any team practice and event as well as promoting your sponsor to other players. Send in pictures to them of your team winning an event while using their gear or paint with you holding up a banner or their jersey. This will make the sponsoring company realize that you have accomplished both of your goals and it will make them a lot happier to deal with you in the future. If you can get media coverage of your team, do so! It is very important to have pictures on websites and forums of your team winning or playing events.

In the end it will be largely up to you as a team to promote yourselves as winners and a professional team. My team has worked hard to get to our own level of paintball; we put in a lot of time for practice and tournaments just like a lot of other teams out there. We never expected anything for free and we always made a commitment to repay our sponsors by winning our events and playing our best. I come with this report to any and all teams looking for sponsorship in the hopes that it will clear a few issues up. Best of luck to everyone who gives it a shot and good luck to the teams that are just starting out.

just something i did earlier,

but to your question, ive found the vast majority of local teams that have a ton of sponsors get them by being supported by a store...

Most businesses will require a team resume and what undrdg mentioned, they want you to bring in customers and supporters

Very true. Most stores have business relationships with the manufactors. Even if you directly contact a manufactor, they will generally refer you to the local store/field. And IF they even consider doing a deal directly with the team, they will generally call the local store/field to inquire about the team. So it always helps to have a good, working relationship with your local stores/fields.

Wow, a far bigger response than I was expecting, thanks guy.

So a lot of my questions have been answered and a couple more have been created...

So since we already have a store/field sponsoring us, how do we go about working with them to get to company sponsors.

Also, since we already have a sponsor that is both a field and a shop, would it be bad if we got other fields and shops to sponsor us?
