Help West Coast, We need NPPL or XSPL events

Hey whats guys, as you may already be hearing seems like NPPL is leaning to not letting NCPA piggyback onto their tournaments this year. For the West Coast this is a critical blow to the progression of NCPA West Division. The only events we have are the NPPL events and without those we are screwed. There are a lot of new schools making teams this year and all their efforts will be gone to waste if we can't have tournaments at NPPL or XPSL.

Please everyone write to Rahel and NPPL and XSPL (same Shawn Walker) and ask to let us have events there. We would gladly pay a reasonable amount to have a quality event.

Email Addresses I could find, please most more if you have better ones:

We could just have events NOT at NPPL/XPSL event like everyone else in the country does...

It's definitely nice to be at those events, but it's also pretty expensive as well.

So what do we do? We are in the same boat. I know we can organize our own tournaments, but it might be hard to get enough teams to play to make it worth while.

if the schools are willing to pay for expensive tournaments, then why not have them? I know alot of school would pay for them.

The deal is most west coast college teams arent supported by their schools. And for them to travel and make it worth while to come out to tournaments is to have them at major events. Most teams are there because it is a NPPL or XPSL event and it is run well. For the past 2 years we have had no problem paying $600 to have a tournament at NPPL, we would rather pay more money and have the event at NPPL than to pay $200 + travel, hotel, and paint fees on the hope of a well run tournament at a local field. The incentive to spend the money is much greater at a NPPL or XPSL event and would have a much larger team turnout.

Well said, but it seems like $600 per team is not cutting it for the NPPL, and NCPA is not backing away from the NPPL, it is the other way around.

Have you been at these events?

Every event we are always up against the gun trying to actually FINISH the event before the end of the day, with referees sometimes leaving to catch flights. HB two yeras ago I ended up reffing because all the refs left.

NPPL is no longer doing Young Guns and no longer doing College because they don't want the logistical hassle of running those divisions on Sunday, and I can't say I blame them. The other option is to do it on Friday/Saturday with the other teams, but then you're looking at us paying closer to $1500 to 'even up' with the entry fees NPPL would be losing by having a college team instead of a D3 or D2 team.

I also don't think it's logical to say people go to the events because it's at NPPL. The teams who ahve been going to NPPL events may have been going because it's NPPL, but teams who would have gone if the entry fee was $150 instead of $600 haven't been going. It could very well be that we'd have two or three times as many teams with a lower entry fee. We don't know.

And, as the guy who usually flies in to help run these events, I could run a much better event if I had a dedicated reffing crew and a whole day to do it. Like it or not, when we go to NPPL events, we've got a ref crew on their 3rd 12 hour day who just wants to leave, which is understandable. I obviously can't put on a trade show, but in terms of play, we'd be in good shape.

alright i feel for you guys since your entire tourney set up is sorta evaporateing but alot of schools in the midwest dont get money or dont get much money from their schools to play tourney paintball. we still throw down tourneys with anywhere from 14-25 teams.
i read about some tourney in socal one of the teams was looking into with an entry of 200ish plus 25 a case paint. any mw team would kill for 25 a case paint and our entry is around the same. paintball is expensive so is college thats what makes it a challenge i think you guys can do fine w/o the nppl.

Don't think there is much choice with the NPPL. I have been to 4 or 5 NPPL events, and it is just like Chris stated, rushed at best. For the last few Cali events last year, the YG's got more respect than we did. I (NAU) are willing to support other tournies that are reasonable and no too far, will miss the NPPL events, but they change and we must adapt. I am playing D3 for SD, just because I have already bought tickets and hotels for sometime now, but I am game to support the NCPA, and their efforts.

Ya Ive played at 4 events so far and yes I do understand that it is very rushed. So as it stands NPPL compleltly doesnt want to host college events unless its $1500 which is understandable because they lose money on D2 and D3 teams. Is there any chance for XPSL events since there is much less traffic there? Also Rahel is there any chance you can lend a helping hand on getting the ball rolling over here to help us host events? I really want to keep the west coast NCPA scene rolling.

I am really trying ot get rolling on NCPA stuff in the next week here. I'm still working through a backlog of email that started when I was at River City for a week, and on top of that we're working on all of our 2007-2008 sponsorship stuff. (The good news is we used to send that stuff out in January because it took that long to get the TV stuff nailed down and we this year we started sending that out in July - a 6 month improvement.)

I am REALLY, REALLY hoping to have some SIGNIFICANT out-of-industry money to dump into the league this year, but we'll see.

I agree with everyone's point that NPPL events are great fun to play. The ambiance, crowd, vendors, fields, and locations are hard to beat. The fact that tech support for markers is available, beautiful woman engaging in "creative branding" for several manufacturers, and friends from years before running amok makes the NPPL one of the top leagues in the country.

What I don't understand is teams trying to compare local events to NPPL events from a cost point of view.

Cost has always been a problem for every school. One of the paradoxes for the average paintball player is that for it to be "cheap and affordable", one must play a lot. Otherwise, you're stuck paying retail (which is still really expensive) and not being able to play often. Both ways, you are shelling out a ton of cash as a player. The NCPA lets us offset the cost of tournaments by letting each region host its own. Let's take a look at some math.

Local:
  • Entry: ~$200
  • Paint: ~$250 at 10 cases for $25 each.
  • Total Cost: ~$450 per team.

NPPL:
  • Entry: $600
  • Paint: ~$300 at 10 cases for $300 each (This seems to be the average price for paint at an event, after talking to several different schools).
  • Total Cost: ~$900 per team.

Assuming that we've all passed elementary school algebra, an NPPL event is twice as expensive as a local event. For the schools who are trying to develop their programs: Is it worth spending an extra $450 per team per event? Wouldn't that money be better spent on practice? Or maybe saved up to play yet another west coast NCPA event?

If anyone feels differently about the cost perspective, please post up. I'd love to see your point of view.

Several people think that this is the death blow to the NCPA on the west coast. In all honesty, I feel quite differently about the situation. While it is unfortunate that we cannot play at NPPL events anymore, I think it will help the west coast grow. I'm a firm believer that the NCPA in the west has always been hampered by having only NPPL tournaments. This keeps the costs up, the well established teams poor, and the poor teams out. Cheaper means that more teams can play.

The long and short of it is that NPPL has been VERY generous in letting us play NPPL events at the price we've been paying. These events are EXTREMELY expensive to put on and we've been paying $120/player when all the other teams that play have been paying $250/player and up. Unfortunately, NPPL has reexamined the cost of having us and determined that it doesn't make business sense to continue to have us at the prices we're paying (I can't blame them; they're trying up a whole field for half a day on Sunday for 3 team entry fees).

We'll have to adjust. But I think this adjustment can be turned to our advantage - lower costs should help us with participation, not hurt us.

The UW Huskies want to attend more NCPA events. We know we'll have to travel a lot, but there is no other way for us to play against other college teams right now. Set up tourneys, give us dates, and we'll do our best to make the trip.

As much fun as it was to go down to Huntington Beach this year, we would rather save money and attend smaller events. I like the idea of playing along side regional tournaments like the XPSL. The Northwest is in the process of forming our own regional league right now, and I'm sure NCPA teams could have our own college division at the events, or at least grudge matches if we don't have enough college teams for a separate division.

We have several fields in the Seattle area with the resources to host big tournaments. IF there are enough teams that'll make the trip, I WILL organize an NCPA event up here.
