Hi guitarbf2kid,
It's actually pretty simple, just do this stuff in order and you will have it working ricky-tic. You need to do these tests with the eyes out of the marker so disassemble it to the point that the eye ribbon is fully out of the marker. Check for continuity from the pad side to the eye side of the ribbon using a meter. You must see continuity from each eye contact to one of the contact pads or the eyes are bad. If the continuity tests check out insert the ribbon connector into the board connector with the metal pads facing up. Power up the board and gently hold the eyes facing each other, the status LED should show the eyes are working. You may need to jiggle them to get them to align and operate but it ony takes a second to find the right position and you will know one way or the other if they are working or not. If you do not get a good board LED status light you have a bad board and need to replace it before proceeding.
