i personally think you can save yourself a LOT of money if you just get familiar with the equipment you've already got. again, just having the crap doesn't make you good, it's using it that makes you an experienced photographer. you'll find that as soon as you buy that digital camera, you'll be in the same boat you were before, except now you'll be 500-800 bucks poorer.
i think larry touched on a good point in regards to film being a serious medium. you'll find that in professional photography, LOTS of artists are still using film. it is by no means a "noob" thing. if you just keep using your 35MM camera, you'll start to pick up the concept behind photography and the techniques use to create a great photo. digital is wonderful, don't get me wrong there, but it seems like it's an unnecessary expense for you right now.
