has anyone here ever painted there gun?

has anyone here ever painted there gun in any way? (spray paint, etc..)

and how did it turn out? did it look good? and did u get a glossy smooth look?

i'm considering about painting mine after i read a artical on painting your gun, considering i have a extra body thats laying around, might even do some custom milling with a dremel . its a old body, so i don't really have any purpose for it any more

not as nice as powdercoating, which gives your gun the liquid coating feel (probably dont understand what im talkin about) but if u do it right and get a bunch of coats on it its fine. I always get a glossy look, or if u like the matte look u use real fine steel wool on it.

I camoed a 98c and it is pretty durable but i stripped the marker then eched it with a spray on acid wash that you can get from most auto parts stores.Prep is everything and with aluminum you must ech it or use a eching type primer. After priming you can make it is nice as you want.House of color makes any kind of custum paint you can imagine(The one that changes color is really cool but very expensive. The only problem with paint is it will never hold up as well as an anno job because it is just paint and no paint is indestructable.

Thumbs up painting your guns

you want to sand your old paint off

put some primer on it

then paint it

then put a clear coat over it

works nice

If done correctly it can come out quite nice looking. It'll never be a strong as powder coating or as durable as anodize, but the end result can also be touched up by the average guy in his garage.

As stated, prep is key.....don't do anything until the surface is ready. On aluminum I recommend not only getting rid of any anodize, but to beadblast the surface so that it appear dull to the eye and feels the same. Once there (again as stated above) use automotive grade etching primer. take your time here and get a nice base for the paint. Let the initial coat of primer completely dry before going on. The use something like krylon grey primer as a 'fill' spray and sand until it's very smooth and then you can paint. Follow the directions for the paint you'll be using and you should be fine.

As for paint....you get what you pay for. if you buy crap..then end result will be the same. When I've done it, I've always used high quality auto paint purchased from an automotive body/paint supplier...not the local supermarket 'touchup' garbage.

For an example go here: http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.p...hreadid=347538

A note on durability. Cars are baked at between 160F and 200F when they are factory painted. This helps to harden the surface and increase adhesion. You might consider doing the same. DO NOT bake a painted tank however since you can anneal out the strength and cause a potentially deadly explosion when it's filled.
If you blow yourself up...it's you're own fault!

I used Krylon's camo paint system on a pump gun of mine, it came out pretty damn good, of course I sanded the anno first and sprayed in 4 coats, but it looks real nice and its pretty durable.

Hey, like 8 or 9 years ago I did a custom job on my first gun, a VM-68, I taped the whole gun with masking tape, then I used razor blades and cut out flames, even on the barrel, I then used silver spray paint and filled in where Id cut the tape out, I let it dry then coated it again, then I took it all off and I coated the entire gun with some clear coat stuff, it came out bad ***, and it never scratched too bad, as for the dremel milling, been there, done that, it works pretty good, just that you cant cover the silver from the metal(unless you paint or re-anno it)
